AC Milan have confirmed that the club has withdrawn from the European Super League, following in the footsteps of the six English clubs and bitter rivals Inter.

I Rossoneri and I Nerazzurri joined Juventus as the three Italian teams chosen to participate in this money-spinning European competition, which would serve as a substitute for the Champions League.

However, Milan have followed Inter out of the door and announced their decision to withdraw from the competition, citing the concern of fans as the reason behind their change of heart.

"We accepted the invitation to participate in the Super League project with the genuine intention to deliver the best possible European competition for football fans around the world and in the best interest of the club and our own fans.

"Change is not always easy, but evolution is necessary for progress, and the structures of European football have evolved and changed over the decades.

"However, the voices and the concerns of fans around the world have clearly been expressed about the Super League, and AC Milan must be sensitive to the voice of those who love this wonderful sport.

"We will continue to work hard to deliver a sustainable model for football."

The three clubs' decision to break away from UEFA and the Champions League has caused controversy all over Europe. I Rossoneri are set to play Sassuolo on Wednesday evening, but Neroverdi coach Roberto De Zerbi stated he didn't want to lead his side out against Milan.

“I don’t want to play against Milan because they are part of these three clubs, but if [Sassuolo’s CEO Giovanni] Carnevali forces me, of course, I will go,” De Zerbi told the Sassuolo channel, as cited by Football Italia.

“Football belongs to everyone and is meritocratic, they released a statement at midnight with their new website. It was like they were putting their flags in a territory they had taken from someone else.

“It’s like the son of a labourer can’t dream of becoming a surgeon, a lawyer or a doctor. It’s as if they had told me as a kid in the schoolyard, that ball’s mine. I’m taking it. Football has a role in society that’s different from other sports."
