Mexicans abroad: Santiago Gimenez scores, Raul Jimenez injured
As the World Cup fast approaches, Mexican national team players are stepping it up to impress head coach Gerardo Martino.
In the Netherlands, it seems Santiago Gimenez is adjusting quite well to Feyenoord, scoring yet another goal to inspire the 6-0 victory over SK Sturm Graz in the Europa League. Elsewhere, Edson Alvarez featured for Ajax in the Champions League clash against Liverpool. But it's not all good news, as Raul Jimenez is back on the sidelines.
Here's everything you missed on Mexicans abroad...
1. Raul Jimenez
Raul Jimenez is back on the sidelines.
Wolves confirmed the Mexican striker will be unavailable for a few weeks as he continues to battle the ongoing groin/adductor issue reported a while back.
Though he will join the Mexican national team for the upcoming friendlies against Peru and Colombia in California, the player will not feature during the matches.
"Raul is unavailable due to a groin/adductor issue. He is rehabilitating with the medical team, and we are expecting this to take a few weeks. He is joining up with the Mexican team for the first week of the international break, but only to continue with his rehabilitation plan."
2. Santiago Gimenez scores again
Santi Gimenez made himself known for Feyenoord once again, scoring in the 6-0 Europa League victory over SK Sturm Graz on Thursday. The player came off the bench in the 64th minute, only to find the back of the net through a header two minutes later.
The Mexican forward has adjusted well to the Eredivisie team, recording five goals since arriving in late July.
3. Carlos Vela does it again
The LAFC figure scored a stunning goal against Minnesota United in the second half to equalize the game and maintain the team's lead in the Western Conference table.
Vela has now managed nine goals and 11 assists this season, getting back to his 2019 ways. Though the Los Angeles team has now fallen behind the Philadelphia Union in the Supporters' Shield race, with the three regular-season games left, anything can happen.
4. Honorable mentions
Edson Alvarez featured for Ajax in their Champions League clash against Liverpool.
Erick Gutierrez played for PSV in their 1-0 victory over RKC Waalwijk.
Andres Guardado featured in Real Betis' 3-2 Europa League victory over Ludogorets.
