Mauricio Pochettino casts fresh doubt over future as PSG head coach

Mauricio Pochettino has cast fresh doubt over his future as Paris Saint-Germain head coach after admitting he's only working towards short-term goals.

The Argentine's position at the Parc des Princes has again been called into question after PSG sensationally threw away a two-goal lead to lose to Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League.

PSG were in complete control of the tie after Kylian Mbappe netted to extend the advantage he had given them in stoppage time of the first leg, but an incredible sequence of events - and a dramatic collapse - saw Real Madrid storm back into the tie with two Karim Benzema goals in just 11 seconds.

Benzema would go on to complete his hat-trick 15 minutes later, dumping Pochettino's side out of the competition in front of a raucous Bernabeu crowd.

Pochettino has shouldered much of the blame for PSG's elimination, with further sections of the club's support turning against him, and there has been regular talk of Zinedine Zidane succeeding him as head coach this coming summer.

The former Spurs boss, who 90min understands is a leading contender to take over at Manchester United alongside Erik ten Hag, has now revealed to PSG TV and the media that he's had sleepless nights over the result and says everybody at the club has been affected - adding that he's focused only on finishing the season strongly in case PSG want to move in a different direction this summer.

"There is sadness and great disappointment after what happened in Madrid, and we all share this sadness. Everyone is affected," Pochettino said.

"But you can't stop in football, you have to achieve the goal we have left, which is to win the league and give the club its tenth title. Of course we won't forget what happened, but our responsibility is to live with the pain of not having gone further in the Champions League.

He added: "It's a situation that will take time. The elimination is a hard blow to take, it was unexpected because, until the 60th minute, we didn't think the game could end like that. It's still difficult to find sleep, peace and quiet and to get it out of your head.

"As for the future... For me the future is today and tomorrow, I don't think about the long-term because it's my responsibility to finish the season in the best way possible. Then we'll see what decision the club makes and where it wants to go."
