Marcus Rashford & Ole Gunnar Solskjaer play down Man Utd title talk

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has admitted it would be ‘stupid’ for the players to think they are in a Premier League title race at this stage of the season, despite rising to second place as a result of Tuesday’s late win over Wolves.

United struggled to get going in the close contest at Old Trafford and Wolves created more clear chances, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side held firm where previously they might have wilted and it was Rashford who popped up with the 93rd minute deflected winner.

With Leicester held by Crystal Palace 24 hours earlier and Everton’s midweek game postponed because of Manchester City’s coronavirus outbreak, United leapfrogged the pair into second.

On the same number of games – until Liverpool take to the pitch against Newcastle on Wednesday night – United are only two points behind the leaders and still haven’t really hit their best form.

United haven’t been in a Premier League title race since they last won it in 2012/13 and Rashford is playing down their strong position now because it is still less than halfway through the campaign.

“We can't look too far ahead," Rashford told Amazon Prime.

"We are a team that is still doing a lot of work on ourselves and to be looking at the table so early on in the season is a bit stupid of us. We have to take it one game at a time and if we can keep finding ways to win like this we will see where we are at the end of the season."

Solskjaer echoed his top goalscorer’s comments by insisting it is too soon for title talk.

“We just focus on the next game. I’m very, very boring,” the United boss also told Amazon Prime.

“We cannot get too far ahead of ourselves. We’re up to a decent position at the moment, but we’re not even halfway [through the season], so it’s a long, long way to go.

“We didn’t perform as well as we want to, but we’ve won a game against a very difficult side to play against. It’s the first win in the league for me against them. It is a big step forward that you don’t perform but you still win.”
