Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms Marcos Rojo & Sergio Romero will leave Man Utd

Manchester United are looking to sell both Marcos Rojo and Sergio Romero this month, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirming that the club not be extending either player’s contract.

Rojo and Romero, who arrived at Old Trafford in 2014 and 2015 respectively, are both out of contract in the summer and will be able to leave as free agents if United do not sell them for a transfer fee before the end of the January transfer window.

Neither has played for United this season and Solskjaer confirmed to the media in his pre-match conference ahead of facing Watford in the FA Cup that the club wants both to find new teams.

“Both of them have contracts until the summer and they are not going to be extended,” the United boss explained, referencing the 12-month option the Old Trafford has on both players to extend until 2022 that will now go unused.

“We're looking for them to find clubs. Marcos has been given time to go home, so he's still in Argentina. Sergio has been back home as well to see his family but he's back in England now.”

Solskjaer went on to praise the professionalism of the veteran Argentine internationals, both of whom played in the 2014 World Cup final, and said they would be ready to play should United still need them. But the chances of that are slim and only likely in an emergency scenario

Somewhat annoyingly, United have priced both players out of a transfer before now.

Romero was wanted by Everton last summer, but United held out for an £8m transfer fee instead of accepting a loan package that effectively amounted to a £2m transfer because of his expiring contract and the Toffees would have paid his wages.

Everton have also twice tried to sign Rojo in previous summers, with United thought to have been holding out for a £30m fee when the Toffees were interested in the player in 2018.

It was Rojo’s form at the 2014 World Cup that prompted United to sign him for around £16m from Sporting CP. Utilised as both a left-back and centre-back, he showed promise on occasion, but injury wrecked his first four years in Manchester and the club has since moved on.

Romero joined a year later a free agent following his release from Sampdoria. He had previously played in Louis van Gaal’s Eredivisie title winning team at AZ and long served as an admirable and reliable understudy for number one goalkeeper David de Gea.
