Senior figures at Manchester United have 'sounded out' former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino about replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the Red Devils' disappointing start to the Premier League season.

United have conceded 11 goals in their opening three top flight matches, losing to Crystal Palace and Tottenham in the process.

Their most recent defeat was a humiliating 6-1 loss at the hands of Spurs, and the Daily Star are reporting that United are targeting Tottenham's former manager to turn their fortunes around.

The report states that United have 'made contact' with Pochettino's representatives, with the Argentinian keen to take up the reins at Old Trafford.

The 48-year-old has been out of work for 11 months after being sacked by Spurs in November 2019, and has been patiently biding his time before returning to the game.

Pochettino did a remarkable job in north London, helping to transform Spurs into top four regulars and guiding them to the Champions League final for the first time in their history.

Since being dismissed by Daniel Levy he has attracted many potential suitors, but reportedly turned down the opportunity to manage Barcelona in order to wait for the club that is right for him.

Ed Woodward is one of many admirers, but is not prepared to relieve Solskjaer of his services during the current international break - but may wield the axe during November's international break should he not see a drastic improvement in results.

United currently sit 16th after recording just one Premier League win all season - a fortuitous 3-2 victory over Brighton thanks to a last minute penalty.

They endured a similarly disappointing start to the 2019/20 campaign, before a Bruno Fernandes-inspired turnaround in January saw the Red Devils go on a long unbeaten run and secure Champions League football on the final day of the season.
