After Manchester United's poor performance in the Europa League last 16 first leg saw them held to a 1-1 draw by AC Milan, the Red Devils must now travel to Italy knowing they need a result to progress into the next round.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will know that he has a huge task on his hands, not only because I Rossoneri are much improved this season, but also because United don't have a particularly good record in Italy.

Here, 90min delves into the archives to bring you every game United have ever played in Italy.



1. AC Milan 4-0 Manchester United - 14/05/1958

United's first trip to Italy came just months after the tragic Munich air disaster.

I Rossoneri, unsurprisingly, proved to be too strong, and emerged 4-0 winners.


2. AC Milan 2-0 Manchester United - 23/04/1969

United renewed their rivalry with Milan 11 years later, but not even George Best could inspire a positive result at San Siro.


3. Juventus 3-0 Manchester United - 03/11/1976

United saw off Juventus 1-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Cup clash in 1976, only to be thumped in the return leg in Turin.

3-0 and a 100% losing record in Italy to date, still without a goal scored.


4. Juventus 2-1 Manchester United - 25/04/1984

Next up was a European Cup date with Juventus, but not even Ron Atkinson could get the job done for United.

A Norman Whiteside strike proved to be in vein as the Red Devils crashed out in the semi-finals.


5. Juventus 1-0 Manchester United - 11/09/1996

It was another 12 years until United rocked up in Italy again, and, oh look, it was against Juventus.

King Eric played for Sir Alex and co, but he couldn't prevent Alen Boksic scoring the only goal of the game.


6. Juventus 1-0 Manchester United - 10/12/1997

United returned to the Stadio Delle Alpi the following year, but again it was defeat on the horizon.

Filippo Inzaghi's late strike made it six defeats from six in Italy for the Red Devils.


7. Inter Milan 1-1 Manchester United - 17/03/1999

As Sir Alex Ferguson's men marched to a treble in 1999, they travelled to Italy twice - the first trip so they could take on Inter.

Nicola Ventola, he of career crumbled fame, gave I Nerazzurri the lead, but Paul Scholes scored late on to salvage a draw.


8. Juventus 2-3 Manchester United - 21/04/1999

Arguably the club's most famous trip to Italy, Roy Keane led by example with a stunning performance as the Red Devils completed a famous comeback to win 3-2.

Inzaghi scored twice, but Keane's goal, as well as strikes from Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole, ensured it was eighth time lucky.


9. Fiorentina 2-0 Manchester United - 23/11/1999

The reigning European champions were put firmly in their place when they visited Florence the following season.

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know it was Gabriel Batistuta who did the damage, banging home a thunderbolt in a 2-0 win.


10. Juventus 0-3 Manchester United - 25/02/2003

Sir Alex Ferguson's men travelled to Turin and put a star-studded Juventus side to the sword thanks to goals from Ryan Giggs (2) and Ruud van Nistelrooy.


11. AC Milan 1-0 Manchester United - 08/03/2005

Two years later, AC Milan hosted a United side featuring a young Cristiano Ronaldo.

Hernan Crespo's strike was enough for Milan to win, and they went on to reach the final in Istanbul.

Cristiano Ronaldo was well on the way to becoming the best player in the world, but his presence wasn't enough to secure victory in Rome.

Wayne Rooney's goal proved inconsequential, but at least United smashed their Italian foes 7-1 in the return leg at Old Trafford.

After their Istanbul failure two years prior, Milan were on the war-path to win the Champions League this time around.

They did, after thumping United at San Siro in the semi-final thanks to goals from Kaka, Clarence Seedorf and Alberto Gilardino.


14. AS Roma 1-1 Manchester United - 12/12/2007

United's 14th trip to Italy ended level as Gerard Pique's only goal for United was cancelled out by Brazilian winger Mancini.

Four months later, United locked horns with Roma again, only this time it was a quarter-final tie.

Ronaldo made the difference on the night, bagging a stunning header, before Rooney tapped home from close range en route to winning the competition.


16. Inter Milan 0-0 Manchester United - 24/02/2009

En route to a second Champions League final in a row, Ryan Giggs' Manchester United went to San Siro and played out an uneventful stalemate against Jose Mourinho's Inter.


17. Barcelona 2-0 Manchester United - 27/05/2009

The final that year took place in Rome, but it was Lionel Messi and Barcelona who were successful with a 2-0 win.


18. AC Milan 2-3 Manchester United - 16/02/2010

A year later, a Ronaldo-less Manchester United pulled up at San Siro and put everyone on notice as Wayne Rooney scored twice in a hugely impressive 3-2 win in the first leg of their last 16 clash.


19. Juventus 1-2 Manchester United - 7/11/2018

Jose Mourinho's Manchester United struggled in the Champions League, but he will always have this famous win at the Allianz Stadium to talk about.

Cristiano Ronaldo gave Juventus the lead with a stunning volley, before late goals from Juan Mata and a Leonardo Bonucci own goal completed a stunning turnaround for the visitors.


20. Real Sociedad 0-4 Manchester United - 18/2/2021

The Red Devils' most recent trip to Italy came in strange circumstances, with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing them to face Spanish side Real Sociedad in Turin.

They came away with a huge 4-0 Europa League win thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes (2), Marcus Rashford and Daniel James.
