Manchester United have added Atletico Madrid's Kieran Trippier to their shortlist of potential right-backs to sign next summer.
23-year-old Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the first choice for the position at Old Trafford, but there is little competition behind him. The decision to loan Diogo Dalot out to AC Milan leaves just Dutch defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah as the only other candidate for the role.
Wan-Bissaka has only missed two games in all competitions, and while United remain very happy with his contributions thus far, The Telegraph believe that Solskjaer is concerned about the lack of competition for the Englishman.
Therefore, United are expected to look for a new right-back next summer, and long-term target Trippier has emerged as a potential candidate for the role.
The 30-year-old remains a core part of the Atletico setup, starting all ten of his side's La Liga games this season, but he will have just one year remaining on his contract next summer and could be tempted by a return to England.
Back in 2019, when he left Tottenham Hotspur, Trippier did admit (via Sky Sports News) that he wanted to remain in England, but it was his desire to play first-team football which ultimately led him to move to Spain.
Given he is the starting right-back for the team who are top of La Liga, it's hard to imagine Trippier wanting to leave and join a club where he would not be guaranteed regular minutes.
Solskjaer will likely stick with Wan-Bissaka, who cost United £45m in the same summer that Trippier left and is seen as the future of the position at Old Trafford.
Trippier is not the only player under consideration by the United chiefs. It is suggested that the club are trying to put together a lengthy shortlist of potential options, but it's not hard to understand why they would put Trippier towards the top.
The 30-year-old is more attack-minded than Wan-Bissaka and has racked up eight assists in his 48 appearances for Diego Simeone's side, and that form has earned him a regular spot in Gareth Southgate's England lineup.
