Manchester United have confirmed their latest box office arrival: Kai Rooney has signed on the dotted line.

And if that name sounds familiar, then it's probably because it should.

He's the son of their all-time leading scorer and appearance holder, after all.

Wayne Rooney enjoyed a record-breaking career at United, scoring 253 goals and winning five Premier Leagues in his 12 years at the club. He's left Rooney Jr with plenty to live up to, but will be hoping his oldest son, aged 11, is up to the task.

Rooney, the dad, said: "Proud day. Kai signing for United. Keep up the hard work son."

MIke Phelan, though, the current assistant manager who worked with the original Rooney between 2008-2014 and currently serves as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's right hand man, was less enthusiastic.

"Not sure I can handle another one," he joked on Twitter. "Keep grafting young 'un and listen to your dad."

Kai is one of four Rooney kids who might have designs on outstripping the Neville legacy and taking over at Old Trafford. It might be a while before we see that, however, considering he is the oldest at 11.

Second generation are becoming more and more common. Erling Haaland, son of former Man City star Alf Inge, is one of the most famous, but we've also seen the offspring of Paolo Maldini and Lillian Thuram, among a host of others, make their mark on the professional game.

Peter Schmeichel's kid Kasper is already a Premier League winner, while Phil Neville's son Harvey is a professional at United, having signed his first deal during the summer.

It will likely be a while before we see Rooney & Neville line up together, however, given the latter is seven years his senior and already a Republic of Ireland under-19 international.

Should mini-Rooney fail to make the grade at Old Trafford, however, he may already have a fall-back option lined up. His dad did just take over at Derby, after all...
