Manchester City booked their place in the Carabao Cup final for the fifth time in six years with a 2-0 win over rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

After an entertaining first half had finished goalless, John Stones gave City the lead four minutes into the second period - the City centre back turning home Phil Foden's whipped free kick with his thigh.

City netted their second inside the final 10 minutes, Fernandinho sending a low volley past Dean Henderson to secure their spot in the Carabao Cup final for the fourth successive season.

1. Goalkeepers & Defenders

Dean Henderson (GK) - 6/10 - Popped up with a good stop in the second half to palm a Sterling header around the post - following by a fabulous save to tip a Riyad Mahrez effort over minutes later.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) - 5/10 -
Had a tough evening up against the lively Foden. His headed clearance in the second half was tame, and it fell straight to the feet of Fernandinho, who volleyed home City's second.

Harry Maguire (CB) - 6/10 -
Did well to stand Mahrez up and win the ball off the City forward in the closing stages of the first half as the visitors mounted a promising attack. Was flat footed and failed to deal with Foden's delivery in the build up to City's opener.

Victor Lindelof (CB) - 5/10 -
Aimlessly attempted to flick Foden's free kick kick clear as the ball floated all the way through to the unmarked Stones for City's opener.

Luke Shaw (LB) - 6/10 -
Did well to dispossess Sterling in the first half in the United box as City poured forward menacingly, but was guilty of losing Stones in the build up to City's opener.

2. Midfielders

Scott McTominay (CDM) - 6/10 - Fired over from range in the first half. Conceded the free kick that led to City's opener and was replaced with 15 minutes remaining.

Fred (CDM) - 6/10 -
Picked out Rashford with a fabulous lofted pass in the first half to get the United forward in behind, from which he could have opened the scoring. Replaced with three minutes remaining.

Bruno Fernandes (CM) - 5/10 -
Tested Zack Steffen inside 10 minutes with a stinging effort from the edge of the box, and blazed wide in the second. Never able to exert his usual devastating creative influence on the game.

3. Forwards

Marcus Rashford (RW) - 5/10 - Came close to opening the scoring for United in the first half, but was denied by a Dias block. Had a largely frustrating evening, rarely seeing much joy down the right flank.

Anthony Martial (ST) - 5/10 -
Looked sharp and had a couple of promising driving runs at the City backline, but was kept relatively quiet by the solid Stones - Dias partnership.

Paul Pogba (LW) - 6/10 - Picked out Fernandes in the build up to a decent second half chance for United. Slotted into central midfield for the final 15 minutes.

Zack Steffen (GK) - 6/10 - Produced a good save to deny Fernandes inside the opening 10 minutes, but was otherwise rarely tested.

Joao Cancelo (RB) - 7/10
- Frequently drifted inside when City were in possession, operating like a fourth central midfielder. Fired a fizzing effort inches over in the second half from the edge of the box.

John Stones (CB) - 7/10 -
Opened the scoring for City in the second half, the most alert man in the box as he turned home Foden's free kick with his thigh.

Ruben Dias (CB) - 8/10 -
Misjudged a clearance in the opening exchanges and was fortunate not to be punished - but then hardly put a foot wrong for the rest of the game. Produced a superb block in the first half to keep out a goal-bound Rashford effort.

Oleksandr Zinchenko (LB) - 7/10 -
Rarely ventured forward in order to stringently stick to his defensive duties - resulting in a frustrating night for Rashford.

6. Midfielders

Fernandinho (CDM) - 8/10 - Doubled City's lead with an instinctively struck volley from the edge of the area into the bottom right hand corner of Henderson's net. Shielded the City back four impeccably.

Ilkay Gundogan (CM) - 7/10 - Had a goal narrowly ruled out for offside in the first five minutes. Efficient in possession, energetic and dogged out of it.

Kevin de Bruyne (CAM) - 8/10 - Rattled the post with a fizzing effort from the edge of the area after 12 minutes. Was at the heart of every dangerous City move.

7. Fowards

Raheem Sterling (RW) - 7/10 - Wasted a promising City opening in the first half, attempting to beat Shaw when he could have squared to de Bruyne. Leapt well to power a header goalwards in the second half, but he was kept out by Henderson.

Riyad Mahrez (ST) - 6/10 -
Playing in an unnatural false nine role, Mahrez brought a fantastic save out of Henderson in the second half with a well struck drive from distance. Replaced with 12 minutes remaining.

Phil Foden (LW) - 8/10 - Picked out Gundogan with a perfect cross inside five minutes, but the German's goal was ruled out for offside, before seeing a well taken goal of his own chalked off for offside. Set up City's opener with a teasing dead ball delivery.
