Manchester United and Manchester City played out a drab goalless draw at Old Trafford on Saturday evening, with defence coming out on top for both sides.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side managed just two shots on target throughout the game, although they looked reasonably threatening from set pieces in the first half. Guardiola's men struggled to get their attacks going, but came closest in the first half as Riyad Mahrez saw a shot saved by David de Gea when put through one-on-one.

Kyle Walker gave away a penalty in the second half when he fouled Marcus Rashford, but the Reds' joy was short lived as VAR pulled it back for an offside in the buildup.

Here are the player ratings for both teams from what was a dour affair in Manchester.

MANCHESTER UNITED

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

David de Gea (GK) - 6/10 - Made a good save to deny Mahrez in the first half but otherwise had nothing to do throughout. Standard.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) - 5/10 - Struggled in the first half against Sterling but was better in the second.

Victor Lindelof (CB) - 6/10 - Good performance as the Swede continued his good form. Marshalled Jesus relatively easily throughout and was a threat from set pieces.

Harry Maguire (CB) - 6/10 - Did well overall and held his own in the odd one-on-one situation he was left in. Bit flat on the ball though.

Luke Shaw (LB) - 7/10 - Best player on the pitch throughout. Kept the City wingers quiet and put in several good deliveries from corners.

2. Midfielders

Fred (CM) - 6/10 - Solid defensively once again but lacked that spark going forward to help unlock the City defence.

Scott McTominay (CM) - 5/10 - Did okay but didn't stand out. You could be forgiven for forgetting he was on the pitch.

Paul Pogba (CM) - 6/10 - Arguably the Red Devils' best attacker on the night but the final pass was lacking.

Bruno Fernandes (AM) - 5/10 - Slow game for the Portuguese magnifico, nothing he tried came off for him and he gave the ball away too often.

3. Forwards

Mason Greenwood (ST) - 5/10 - Struggled to get into the game like most of the attackers, nothing standout from the youngster.

Marcus Rashford (ST) - 6/10 - Never really got going. Won a penalty early in the second half but it was ruled out for offside.

4. Substitutes

Anthony Martial (ST) - N/A

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Ederson (GK) - 5/10 - Had nothing to do all night and did it well. Kicking was a bit off, though.

Kyle Walker (RB) - 5/10 - Made good recoveries defensively to sniff out any counter-attack dangers but not great elsewhere. Gave away a penalty and was lucky to be saved by VAR.

John Stones (CB) - 6/10 - Another clean sheet and another performance where he partnered well with Ruben Dias.

Ruben Dias (CB) - 6/10 - City's best defender this season had another good performance, although there wasn't much to be done.

Joao Cancelo (LB) - 6/10 - Looked threatening in the first half with Sterling on the left-wing but it never quite clicked for him in the final third.

6. Midfielders

Fernandinho (DM) - 6/10 - A return to the starting lineup in a pretty reserved performance from City, but he did what he was there to do.

Rodri (DM) - 5/10 - Never got his passing going but defended well for the most part for the away side.

Kevin De Bruyne (AM) - 6/10 - The only player in blue who showed some urgency throughout but couldn't work his magic for once.

7. Forwards

Riyad Mahrez (RW) - 4/10 - Had a torrid time against Luke Shaw where nothing came off for him. Was substituted midway through the second half.

Gabriel Jesus (ST) - 5/10 - Lacked a killer instinct and did nothing really. Not a great showing with Sergio Aguero back on the scene.

Raheem Sterling (LW) - 6/10 - He tried to make things happen but couldn't get the better of Wan-Bissaka other than one effort in the first half.

8. Substitutes

Ferran Torres (RW) - N/A
