Manchester City come into the new campaign as the team to beat on three different fronts after winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in 2022/23.

As is always the case with the Cityzens, the summer has been understated and efficient. Sales and signings are done with very little saga and fanfare, with Ilkay Gundogan's departure being something of an anomaly.

They have added Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea to bolster midfield in Gundogan's absence, replaced the ageing Aymeric Laporte with Josko Gvardiol and added a wildcard on the wing in the form of Jeremy Doku to fill the void left by Riyad Mahrez. Matheus Nunes' deadline day move from Wolverhampton Wanderers provided more midfield cover.

As it stands, here are Man City's squad numbers for the 2023/24 campaign.

Man City squad numbers available to new signings

There are a few decent numbers still available at City, although the number one shirt would have to go to a backup goalkeeper given Ederson is set with 31 and certainly first choice.

Joao Cancelo's deadline day loan move to Barcelona also opened up the number seven shirt, previously worn by the likes of Raheem Sterling, James Milner and Stephen Ireland, for any January arrivals.

What numbers can Premier League players wear?

The primary two rules when it comes to squad numbers in the Premier League is that a player's number must be unique within the team and between 1 and 99. Zero is not allowed.

Also following tradition, goalkeepers generally occupy numbers one and 13.

There are various traditions at play which suggest first-team players take numbers between 1 and 30, but this is something players and clubs are increasingly willing to ignore. Man City youngster Rico Lewis has worn the highest number, with 82 in the 2022/23 campaign.

Can Premier League players change squad numbers?

Premier League players are only allowed to change their squad number during pre-season or if one is sold or loaned to another club in the January transfer window.

Clubs must submit their confirmed squad list - including shirt numbers - by a specified deadline each year and numbers cannot be changed thereafter. In 2021 that deadline was 1 September.
