Manchester City named the most expensive starting lineup in football history against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon, costing an eye-watering £550m to assemble.

That's without even considering their bench - which was worth almost £350m.

The Citizens have continued splashing the cash this summer, paying a British record £100m transfer fee for Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish, while they remain linked with Spurs star Harry Kane - who if he signs would be the most expensive of the lot by a distance.

Even without the England captain, who would set them back around £150m, City still managed to name the most expensive team in the history of the sport when they took to the field in north London on Sunday.

Grealish (£100m) is of course the dearest of the 11, but there were several players who cost in the region of £50-60m, including Joao Cancelo, Ruben Dias, Benjamin Mendy, Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling.

Man City also paid around £35m for Ederson back in 2017, which was a record at that time for a goalkeeper. Nathan Ake, a surprise starter, cost around £40m from relegated Bournemouth back in 2020.

The £550m total averaged out at a whopping £50m per player, and the bench was equally as costly.

John Stones, Rodri, Aymeric Laporte and Kevin de Bruyne were all signed in excess of £50m, while Kyle Walker and Bernardo Silva were almost equally as expensive. In total, the substitutes culminated in an incredible £347m outlay.

Talk about squad depth.

That gave Pep Guardiola's squad to face Spurs an overall value of around £900m, an incredible total. The potential purchase of Kane could push that value to the £1bn mark in the future, as Man City's spending continues to break records.

The Premier League champions are hoping to add Kane to their side this summer, but Spurs are reluctant to sell their attacking talisman.
