Manchester City 0-2 Manchester United: Player ratings as United end City's winning streak

Manchester United ended Manchester City's 21-game winning run, with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw giving the Red Devils a 2-0 win over their rivals at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The game got off to an incredible start when Anthony Martial was brought down in the box by Gabriel Jesus after just 34 seconds. Bruno Fernandes then managed to squeeze the resultant penalty past Ederson to open the scoring.

Following this early setback City rallied, carving out a few promising opportunities without ever coming that close to levelling the scores.

After the break United would double the lead through Luke Shaw, who ran the length of the field before playing a one-two with Marcus Rashford and placing the ball into the bottom corner. Again, City attempted to hit back but they were curtailed by some impressive United defending.

The result moves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side up to second in the Premier League table, although they remain 11 points adrift of their Manchester rivals.

MAN CITY RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Ederson (GK) - 6/10 - Made one solid stop from Martial in the second half. Little he could do about the goals.

Joao Cancelo (RB) - 5/10 - Misjudged his interception badly in the buildup to United's second. Generally struggled defensively with Shaw, Rashford and Martial exploiting the space left by his advanced runs.

John Stones (CB) - 6/10 - Drove his team forwards from the back and won six of his eight duels. Perhaps could have done more to prevent Shaw scoring.

Ruben Dias (CB) - 6/10 - Not too bad. His passing was spot on and he cannot be blamed for either of United's strikes.

Oleksandr Zinchenko (LB) - 6/10 - Perhaps could have offered more in the attacking phase. Solid in defence, although Wan-Bissaka and James offered little.

2. Midfielders

Rodri (DM) - 7/10 - Did pretty well both in and out of possession. His positioning and timing helped him rack up three tackles and he was spotless on the ball. The Spaniard also went close to scoring in the second half.

Kevin De Bruyne (CM) - 7/10 - Made a string of basic errors before the break. He tried singlehandedly to turn things around for his team, racking up eight key passes.

Ilkay Gundogan (CM) - 6/10 - Popped up all over the place to help knit together his side's passing moves around the box. Faded as things progressed.

3. Forwards

Riyad Mahrez (RW) - 5/10 - Combined well with Cancelo to give Luke Shaw a few problems in the opening stages. As things wore on he held onto the ball for far too long.

Gabriel Jesus (ST) - 5/10 - Got off to the worst possible start by conceding a penalty after less than 40 seconds. Was involved in City's most promising attacks but couldn't make amends for his error.

Raheem Sterling (LW) - 4/10 - Could not end his scoreless run against his side's bitter rivals. He caused some problems early on but Wan-Bissaka pocketed him before long. Missed a huge chance at the end.

4. Substitutes

Kyle Walker - 6/10 - After he came on, City stopped being torn apart down the right.

Phil Foden - 6/10 - Added spice to City's attack as soon as he came on. Bizarre that he did not start.

MANCHESTER UNITED RATINGS

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

Dean Henderson (GK) - 7/10 - He stepped into David de Gea's shoes with minimal fuss. More performances like this and it won't be long until he gets the number one spot permanently.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) - 8/10 - Once again did well to keep Sterling quiet. His five interceptions were a game high.

Victor Lindelof (CB) - 7/10 - Contained City pretty effectively, tracking their numerous runs in behind.

Harry Maguire (CB) - 7/10 - Comfortable display. He dealt with Jesus easily and registered an impressive nine clearances.

Luke Shaw (LB) - 8/10 - His second-half goal was perhaps his best moment in a United shirt. Defended with discipline as well.

6. Midfielders

Scott McTominay (CM) - 7/10 - Kept tight to Gundogan throughout, making sure he had to work for every inch of space.

Fred (CM) - 7/10 - Got through a lot of legwork and provided his side with a solid base to launch their counterattacks. Also, more importantly, he registered a nutmeg.

Bruno Fernandes (AM) - 7/10 - Made no mistake from the spot. Drifted in and out of the game but created a few chances for his team.

7. Forwards

Daniel James (RW) - 6/10 - The least dangerous of United's forwards by some margin. Pressed well at times.

Anthony Martial (ST) - 8/10 - Won his side the penalty with an ambitious run into the box. Was a much better display all-round as well. He linked things effectively but did miss a very easy chance in the second half.

Marcus Rashford (LW) - 7/10 - He is clearly still not at 100% physically but he did well here. Was always positive and showed composure to assist Shaw's goal. Was taken off after suffering a knock to his foot.

8. Substitutes

Mason Greenwood - 6/10 - Added even more pace to the United attack and defended when required.
