Manchester Women have continued a prolific summer recruitment strategy by confirming the signing of Germany Under-19 captain Ivana Fuso on a two-year contract.

The teenager joins an ambitious United hoping to build on an impressive 2019/20 WSL season after leaving Swiss club Basel and has also previously played for top flight German side Freiburg.

Already this summer, United have captured England midfielder Lucy Staniforth and emerging Spain full-back Ona Batlle. 16-year-old Wales international Carrie Jones has also been drafted in from Cardiff and will initially join the club’s Under-21 squad.

Despite Fuso’s young age, the versatile forward will become an immediate first-teamer.

“I’m so happy to be here, it’s a dream to sign for a club like Manchester United. Casey [Stoney] is a great coach and I’m looking forward to working with her and the staff, as well as meeting my new team-mates,” she told the club’s official website.

“It will be my first time playing in England, the league is very competitive and I know that being a part of this team will help me develop further as a player. I’m ready to start training and really put the hard work in ahead of the new season.”

Stoney spoke highly of Fuso’s potential for the future, commenting, “She is an intelligent player who is fantastic in possession and will add so much to our attacking play. I’ve also been impressed with the leadership skills she possesses at such a young age and I know she will fit in well with the squad.

“I’d like to welcome Ivana to the team; we are all looking forward to working with her.”

United finished fourth on points per game in the abandoned 2019/20 season, their first year as a top flight WSL club. The new campaign is due to begin in early September, with the team aiming to now kick on and bridge the gap to the ‘big three’ – Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City.
