Manchester United are set to face their third La Liga side of the season after being pitted against Real Betis in the Europa League last 16.

The club's resurgence under Erik ten Hag continued when they beat Barcelona 2-1 on home turf to win 4-3 on aggregate and progress to the next round of the competition, one they'll fancy their chances of winning.

Their next opponents are Real Betis, who finished top of their group ahead of Roma, drawing with the Italian side once and winning their five other matches.

The Europa League clash between the two sides will be the first time they've ever gone head-to-head competitively, having only met in a friendly in the past.

That friendly took place during the World Cup-induced winter break at the end of last year and ended 1-0 to Real Betis with Nabil Fekir scoring the only goal of the game.

Man Utd's Europa League record vs Spanish clubs

They may not have faced Real Betis before, but Man Utd have battled it out with Spanish opponents a huge number of times in the Europa League.

The Red Devils first did so in 2012, losing in the quarter-finals to Marcelo Bielsa's Athletic Club, being beaten 3-2 at home and 2-1 in Spain.

Five years later, they were pitted against Celta Vigo in the semi-finals of the tournament and scraped through, winning 1-0 away and drawing 1-1 at home to make it to the final which they'd ultimately win.

Things didn't go so well the following year with Sevilla knocking them out in the quarter-finals and the same side did so again in the 2020 semis.

Man Utd got past Real Sociedad and Granada on their run to the final in 2021, where they lost to Villarreal on penalties, but they did at least avenge that defeat twice in the group stages the following season.

This season, they lost to Sociedad 1-0 at home before beating them 1-0 away, and knocked Barcelona out in the playoff round.

Man Utd and Real Betis' Europa League pedigree

Man Utd have competed in the Europa League five times not including this season and have won it once, under Jose Mourinho in 2016/17.

They've also lost in the final once, been beaten in the semi-finals once and knocked out in the last 16 on two occasions.

Real Betis on the other hand have only competed in the tournament three times and have never made it past the round of 16, losing at that stage to Frankfurt last season and to Sevilla in 2013/14, and losing the playoff before that point to Rennes in 2018/19.
