Man Utd welcome Atalanta to Old Trafford in the Champions League group stages as Ole Gunnar Solksjaer looks to ease the growing pressure on his position as manager.

United were condemned to a 4-2 defeat by Leicester in the Premier League at the weekend, while they were indebted to a stoppage time winner from Cristiano Ronaldo against Villarreal in their previous Champions League outing.

Atalanta sit at the top of Group F after victory over Young Boys last time out, with Gian Piero Gasperini's side having lost just once in their last seven outings in all competitions heading into Wednesday evening.

Raphael Varane will miss the match as he continues his recovery from a groin injury sustained on international duty with France, although Man Utd will be buoyed by the return of Harry Maguire at the weekend.

Solskjaer will welcome Fred and Edinson Cavani back into contention, with both missing the defeat to Leicester after starring on international duty less than 48 hours before kick-off on Saturday. Anthony Martial could also return from a minor knock.

Gasperini has a number of injury concerns, with Hans Hateboer being joined on the sidelines by Matteo Pessina.

Defender Berat Djimsiti is likely to miss the game with a broken hand, while Robin Gosens continues to wrestle with a muscle problem after limping off against Milan prior to the international break. Gasperini is also sweating on the fitness of defender Rafael Toloi after he was forced off in the win over Empoli at the weekend.

Man Utd vs Atalanta score prediction

Cristiano Ronaldo

Man Utd are in for a very tricky test against an Atalanta side who appeared to have found their groove in Serie A after a sluggish start.

The presence of Cristiano Ronaldo can often mask United's deficiencies - as he did with his goal against Villarreal in the previous matchday - but Atalanta boast enough attacking threat to do damage to a defence still reeling from conceding four against Leicester.

Man Utd's athleticism in the forward areas should trouble Atalanta going in the other direction, so expect a high-scoring contest.

Prediction: Man Utd 3-2 Atalanta
