Man Utd reveal severity of Casemiro hamstring injury in Newcastle defeat

Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Casemiro will miss "several weeks" of action after suffering a hamstring injury in the Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United.

Casemiro returned from a three-game absence to start the game against Newcastle but was replaced at half-time after aggravating his hamstring.

After conducting scans on the injury, United have now ruled Casemiro out for the coming weeks.

"Casemiro will be out for several weeks due to a hamstring injury suffered during our Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday," a club statement read.

"The Brazilian midfielder was withdrawn at half-time due to the issue, and subsequent assessment has revealed a strain that will keep him out for a number of weeks."

Without Casemiro, manager Erik ten Hag will be forced to rely on summer signings Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount in midfield, while Scotland international Scott McTominay is also available but has occasionally been used in a more-advanced role.

United fans are eagerly awaiting the return of teenage midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who shone in pre-season before picking up an ankle injury which delayed his start to the season.

18-year-old Mainoo made his first competitive appearance of the campaign with 45 minutes in United Under-19's UEFA Youth League defeat to Kobenhavn last month and then dazzled for the Under-21's against Salford City as he steps up his return to senior action.

With Casemiro unavailable, Ten Hag may call Mainoo back up to the first-team fold ahead of Saturday's trip to Fulham.
