Manchester United are set to push ahead with plans to open contract talks with David De Gea following the appointment of Erik ten Hag, 90min understands.

In a season full of disappointments and let downs, De Gea has been one of the few plus points within the club for his performances and media appearances at difficult moments.

While he has recently lost his place in the Spanish national team, and there was a point where his position at United number one was under threat from England international Dean Henderson, the 31-year-old has battled hard to recapture his form and position in the United goal.

He is likely to be named the club's player of the year for the fifth time in nine seasons at the end of the campaign.

90min revealed in February that De Gea and United were set for talks about his future, and it's now understood that the club have decided they want to hand him fresh terms.

Listen now to 90min's brand new podcast, Talking Transfers, with Scott Saunders & Graeme Bailey. Toby Cudworth joins the show again this week to discuss how Erik ten Hag's appointment may affect Man Utd's pursuit of Paul Mitchell. There is also chat on the futures of Jesse Lingard & David de Gea and a look at what Newcastle are planning this summer.

De Gea’s current deal is due to run until 2023, and while United do also possess an option to extend the deal by a year they are looking to tie him down for longer - with his peak years as a goalkeeper likely still ahead of him.

Sources from with United have indicated they see De Gea as a stabilising element within the squad, and that they feel it is crucial he stays over what is likely to be a summer of upheaval - with six players out of contract at the end of June and a number of in-contract players up for sale.

De Gea is one of the player’s within the squad that feels Ten Hag’s appointment is positive and he is open to talks with the current Ajax boss in the near future.
