Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will not hesitate to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if the club continue to underperform this season, according to a new report.

An opening day defeat at home to Crystal Palace was bad enough, but while the Red Devils secured victory over Brighton in their next Premier League game, the three points came in fortuitous circumstances as the Seagulls hit the woodwork five times - outplaying their opponents in the process.

Hoping for a swift turnaround, United were then humbled 6-1 at home to Tottenham to mark the lowest point of the Norwegian's reign in charge of the club. The implosion on that day has thrust Solskjaer into a limelight he'd rather stay out of, heaping the pressure on his shoulders.

Now, as per the Mirror, if Woodward doesn't see a significant upturn in form when the Premier League resumes, he will have no issue in relieving the former striker of his duties. Naturally, there would be huge consequences of sacking a certified club legend, but such sentiments would be put to one side in favour of the Red Devils' best interests.

Another Mirror report adds that Paul Pogba's recent comments regarding a future move to Real Madrid have reinforced the idea that a stronger figure is needed in Old Trafford's managerial dugout.

Woodward himself has come under stinging criticism - again - having failed to secure United's key targets in the recent transfer window.

A clear admiration for Jadon Sancho fell way short of completion after the club dallied on the fee, while the signings brought in were packaged under 'panic buy' given the late nature of their activity.

Heading into a crucial few weeks, United take on Newcastle, Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton in the top-flight, with Champions League group games at PSG and a home tie with RB Leipzig sandwiched in between.

Sceptics feel Woodward is too soft to sack Solskjaer if results don't pick up, but the United chief has cited Liverpool's decision to part ways with Sir Kenny Dalglish in 2012 as evidence he could follow suit. As ever, the leading candidate to resume the role would be Mauricio Pochettino, who has been out of work for almost 11 months since leaving Tottenham.
