Man Utd giving 'serious consideration' to sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer imminently

Manchester United are giving ‘serious consideration’ to sacking manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before the club’s next game in response to Sunday’s humiliating home defeat to Liverpool.

United are due to travel to Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday. But with Solskjaer now under more pressure than at any point during his almost three years in charge, the possibility has arisen that he could be given the boot before that game.

Solskjaer has overseen steady progress since he was appointed as successor to Jose Mourinho, initially as an interim choice, in December 2018. That continued ahead of this season when Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo further boosted an improving squad.

The Norwegian, who has overseen higher Premier League finishes year on year, was even handed a new contract to continue the work that he has started.

But a poor start to the season, which has seen United lose three of their last four Premier League games, compounded by the atrocious performance against Liverpool, has brought it with it enormous pressure and increasing uncertainty about his future.

The Manchester Evening News reports that Solskjaer may have taken charge of his last game as United boss because club officials are weighing up whether to sack him in the coming days. They are said to be giving it ‘serious consideration’, with the Spurs game only five days away.

Solskjaer, who remains a United legend for his achievements as a player, took full responsibility for the performance and result against Liverpool after the game.

"It is mine [responsibility], that is it,” he said. The coaching staff are very, very good, brilliant. I choose the way we approach the game, we were not clinical enough and gave too much space and when you give good players space they score.

"We are at home, playing against Liverpool, we have gone here over the last two and half years and had a similar approach to high press but today they scored on their chances. I think as Manchester United we should always try to stamp our authority on the game.

"You can look at last season when we lost to Spurs 6-1, this is worse, miles worse. This is miles worse for me as a Manchester lad. I've just got to say we have to get over this as quickly as we can."
