Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani returned to training on Wednesday following his extended summer break.

The veteran striker had been granted a longer holiday after his partner gave birth to his fourth child earlier this summer, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to give Cavani as much time as possible to be with his family.

After new signing Jadon Sancho linked up with the squad, Cavani was the only United player yet to return, with Jonathan Shrager reporting that the Uruguay international was scheduled to head back to England last Thursday.

There was some confusion about when he would be able to train, though, due to quarantine rules. Uruguay is on the UK's red list, which normally means anyone travelling from there would have to undergo a ten-day isolation period in a specialised hotel.

Cavani missed the season opener against Leeds on Saturday, a game in which United strolled to an emphatic 5-1 win. However, he may be involved against Southampton on August 22 as he is now back in training.

The news is a boost for United as Cavani enjoyed a terrific debut Premier League season last time out, registering ten goals and four assists.

Cavani's imminent return leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with several difficult decisions to make. United started the Leeds game with a frontline of Daniel James, Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba with Sancho confined to a cameo appearance from the bench.

As well as Cavani, Anthony Martial is also in contention and Marcus Rashford will be returning too when he has recovered from shoulder surgery.

Other than Rashford and left-back Alex Telles who has an ankle problem, Solskjaer has close to a full squad to select from for the Southampton game. United will be hoping for a repeat of their meeting last season, when they romped to a 9-0 victory following an early red card for Alex Jankewitz.
