Manchester United expect left-back Luke Shaw to be sidelined for up to ten weeks as a result of his muscle injury.

The England international picked up the problem in the aftermath of United's 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and, despite initial optimism, it was later confirmed that Shaw would be sidelined for a significant period.

According to the Daily Mail, Shaw is set to be unavailable for United for up to ten weeks while he recovers.

Should such a timeline hold true, Shaw will now miss the entirety of both September and October and will instead have his eyes on a return in the middle of November.

United take on Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday and also have a derby against Manchester City on 29 October which they will likely have to contend without Shaw.

A ten-week layoff would also see Shaw miss the first four rounds of Champions League group fixtures. United were drawn in Group A alongside Bayern Munich, Galatasaray and Copenhagen.

Concerns over Shaw's absence, coupled with the current injury problems for backup Tyrell Malacia, have seen United enter the transfer marker for a replacement.

Talks were held with Chelsea over Marc Cucurella but, after a deal could not be agreed, the Red Devils opened talks with Tottenham Hotspur and have struck a deal to sign Sergio Reguilon on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Crucially, the agreement for Reguilon is understood to contain a break clause in January, when both Shaw and Malacia should be fit once again.

United had requested such a clause in their move for Cucurella, but the Spaniard's appearance for Chelsea in the Carabao Cup against Wimbledon would leave him unavailable to play for a third team for the second half of the campaign if his stint at Old Trafford was cut short early.
