Man Utd's interest in full-back signings makes complete sense after Wolves win

Manchester United added another to their tally of last-minute winners in the Premier League this week, beating Wolves thanks to a 93rd-minute Marcus Rashford strike.

It was a frustrating night all round for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, as the visitors set up shop behind the ball and closed off spaces looking to counter. It was reminiscent of previous clashes between the two, with only one goal scored in the previous three games.

Manchester United's attacking players were nullified by the deep defensive line, the lack of space to run into nullifying the pace of the likes of Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood. It placed greater emphasis on the full-backs to create, but United struggled.

Alex Telles delivered a handful of crosses for Edinson Cavani and co in the first half, or...well, at least, he 'delivered' a handful of 'crosses' near Cavani and co. He was substituted at half time, replaced by Luke Shaw who came in and linked well with the attacking players, but also struggled to create anything of note.

On the other side of the pitch, Aaron Wan-Bissaka often found himself with the freedom of the right wing but once again he failed to produce the goods going forward.

This isn't the first time Wan-Bissaka's attacking contribution has been questioned since he joined the club for £50m 18 months ago. He's lived up to his reputation defensively and is a sizeable part of why the club's defensive record improved so much last season. But going forward, there is a gaping hole in his game.

He just doesn't look right running at an opponent. He often looks like he's falling over himself, and has become a running joke on social media for the aesthetics he provides when trying to beat an opponent in a one on one situation.

With his obvious flaws in attack, teams often just let him have the ball in advanced areas and instead focus on ensuring he can't get the ball to one of the more talented players in the side.

United are now looking to address that problem, with an apparent interest in Norwich full-back Max Aarons for the January transfer window.

The England Under-21 international was a key figure in the Norwich side that saw themselves relegated from the Premier League last season, but was impressive going forward and has been good this season too.

With Diogo Dalot already sent out on loan to AC Milan, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had Brandon Williams as his backup right-back for the campaign so far. Despite that, Solskjaer opted to use Victor Lindelof and Axel Tuanzebe at right-back instead in recent games, with Williams not 100% fit.

With Williams now likely to leave the club on loan in January, with Southampton and Newcastle among the clubs reportedly interested, United need not only cover but also competition for that position.

Telles' arrival in the summer has seen a huge upturn in the form of Shaw at left-back, knowing that his position is up for grabs should he suffer a blip in performances as he has previously. The hope is that a right-back signing could do the same for Wan-Bissaka.

Aarons is a very attacking full-back who is competent defensively, while Wan-Bissaka is the complete opposite. While the former Crystal Palace man would remain first-choice ahead of Aarons, the extra threat in some games should see him have to up his levels to maintain that certainty.

For whatever reason, Solskjaer obviously isn't a fan of Dalot, who could have filled in in the attacking sense quite comfortably. But with his future quite clearly laying away from Old Trafford, United seem to be making a decision to press on once again with a young talent who can progress and develop.

Manchester United's needs are clear. They need more creativity in the side and they need to find consistency in performances. A start to that is to upgrade their weaker positions and all the top teams in world football have fantastic attacking full-backs.

It's time for Manchester United to enter that realm too and strengthen at full-back to add an extra dimension to their squad.
