Edinson Cavani will wear the number seven shirt for Manchester United following his arrival as a free agent on deadline day.

The veteran Uruguayan forward was one of four arrivals on the final day of the transfer window on Monday, as Porto's Alex Telles and teenage starlets Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri also arrived at Old Trafford.

The club, though, will surely rue a major missed opportunity to secure the services of Jadon Sancho and their failure to identify a suitable centre-back target in the summer. United were, of course, embarrassed by Tottenham in a 6-1 defeat on Sunday afternoon.

Nevertheless, the club's work on deadline day may have lifted the spirits of the Red Devils faithful slightly and United revealed on their official Twitter page that their highest-profile signing in the window will wear the number seven for the 2020/21 campaign.

Cavani joins an illustrious list of United legends to don such a jersey; including Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Bryan Robson.

Although, the club have failed to adequately place the huge void left by Ronaldo following his departure to Real Madrid in 2009.

The likes of Memphis Depay, Angel Di Maria and Michael Owen have all donned the number seven since the Portuguese icon's exit with minimal success, while Alexis Sanchez - who Cavani will succeed as the #7 holder - was also a distinct flop at Old Trafford.

Thus, the 33-year-old ex-Paris Saint Germain hitman will be hoping he enjoys an alternate fate to his predeccessors.

Cavani arrives at the club on a one-year deal with the option to extend by a further year. The striker scored 200 times in 301 appearances for Les Parisiens but his influence gradually waned in Thomas Tuchel's side. He played just 20 games in 2019/20, scoring seven times in all competitions.
