Manchester United will travel to Malta for a week-long training camp in early January as they seek to stay fresh during the WSL winter break.

Marc Skinner’s side enjoyed a flying start to the 2022/23 season, finishing the calendar year seven points better off than they were after the same number of games in 2021/22.

But following the Continental Cup win over Sheffield United on 18 December, United have been left with nearly a month without games until their WSL schedule resumes with the visit of Liverpool to Leigh Sports Village on 15 January.

Skinner, who intends to let his players and support staff completely unwind without contact from him over the Christmas period, confirmed last week that options for a winter training camp in sunnier climates were being considered for early January.

Now, Malta has been confirmed as the destination, including a friendly against current Maltese champions Birkirkara FC on Sunday 6 January. Tickets for the game at Hibernians Stadium are free of charge courtesy of Visit Malta and can be claimed from United’s ticketing website.

“The opportunity to get our girls back together after the Christmas break at Malta’s first-class facilities, to set the objectives ahead of a big second half of the season, is an excellent one for us,” Skinner explained, as well as praising the longstanding relationship between the club and country.

“The players can expect plenty of hard work on the grass, while enjoying the world-renowned hospitality of the people of Malta, also home to one of our oldest Official Supporter’s Clubs in the world. A privilege of being at Manchester United is having fans all over the world and we cannot wait to spend some time with them and remind ourselves what it is to play for this wonderful football club.”

United head of women’s football Polly Bancroft added: “This winter training camp will be a great opportunity for us to build on the success we have already achieved so far this season, allowing us to train within a different climate and culture, while experiencing the warmth of our Maltese official supporter's club.

“Playing local side Birkirkara FC will allow our squad to compete against a diverse opponent, away from their usual Carrington environment.”
