Manchester United were expectedly beaten by their crosstown rivals on Sunday afternoon, but Erik ten Hag's were at least able to put up a much better fight than many people thought they would at the Etihad Stadium.

The Red Devils even took a shocking lead into half-time thanks to a thumping effort from Marcus Rashford.

However while they defended stoutly for much of the game, City's consistent pressure inevitably resulted in the home side plundering three second half goals to win the game.

Here's Man Utd's best and worst players in the defeat, courtesy of 90min's esteemed player ratings.

Man Utd's best player vs Man City

Marcus Rashford: 7/10

Sure, his second half performance wasn't particularly eye-catching as he did largely struggled to hold up the ball for his side when, on the rare occasion, they managed to get the ball into the opposition half.

But none of that takes away from just how stunning a goal Rashford scored in the first half of the game.

His thumping effort was one of the best of his career to date, reminding Man Utd fans of the ferocity with which Wayne Rooney used to find the back of the net in the mid-2000s (mainly against Newcastle United).

Honourable mention

Andre Onana: 7/10

A goalkeeper that conceded three goals is deserving of an honourable mention?

Yep.

And he is because most other goalkeepers would've conceded five or six on Sunday. Andre Onana made five impressive stops during the defeat, trying his damnedest to keep his side in the game. His save to deny Phil Foden in the first half was a particular highlight of Onana's outing at the Etihad Stadium.

The loanee came off the bench in the 82nd minute and looked utterly lost in and out of possession thereafter.

His clumsiness on the ball resulted in Erling Haaland's 91st minute goal, and cemented many people's opinion that Man Utd shouldn't take up the option to sign the Morocco international on a permanent deal in the summer.

Dishonourable mention

Scott McTominay: 5/10

The Scottish international has been a match-winner for Man Utd on a number of occasions this season, but he really struggled to get into the game at all on Sunday afternoon.

McTominay worked hard off the ball, but wasn't on it enough to earn a high rating from us.
