Manchester United are reported to have fought off competition from fellow Premier League heavyweights Chelsea to sign 16-year-old Watford left-back Harry Amass.

Amass is highly rated in England and has even been starting for Watford's Under-18 side in the FA Youth Cup, featuring twice before the Hornets fell in the fifth round.

The teenager also made the bench for the senior side in the FA Cup third round defeat to Reading but went unused.

According to the Evening Standard, there has been significant interest in Amass from across the Premier League, with Chelsea targeting the young left-back as part of their aggressive pursuit of the game's top young talents.

However, Amass is understood to have agreed to join United instead and is now in advanced talks over a move to Old Trafford.

Amass has opted to leave Watford as he believes training at a top academy like United's will accelerate his development, rather than remaining in the Championship.

His move to United is set to come shortly after the Red Devils finalised the signing of teenage striker Gabriele Biancheri from Cardiff.

Biancheri, 16, represents Wales at youth level but is eligible to play for both England and Italy as well.
