Amad Diallo scored the winner and was sent off shortly afterwards as Manchester United came from behind to win a classic FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday and end Liverpool's hopes of a quadruple.

A fast Red Devils start saw Scott McTominay deservedly put the hosts ahead but lapses in concentration helped Jurgen Klopp's side overturn that deficit through Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah.

Substitute Antony forced extra time with a smart finish, but Liverpool took advantage of disorganisation in Man Utd's ranks when Elliott's deflected strike from distance crept past Andre Onana.

However, Marcus Rashford's late effort drew United level again before Amad Diallo sensationally won it, then being sent off for two yellow cards before the full-time whistle.

How the game unfolded

The fourth FA Cup quarter-final of the weekend kicked off at Old Trafford as Man Utd and Liverpool attempted to join Coventry City, Manchester City and Chelsea in the final four of the competition.

Though their last two games against the Reds have hardly been filled with attacking intent - losing 7-0 and drawing 0-0 in two previous visits to Anfield - Erik ten Hag's side flew out of the blocks as the returning Aaron Wan-Bissaka registered the first shot on target of the afternoon after nice link-up play with Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo.

The energetic Mainoo made in impressive start in midfield against Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai, jinking through challenges, though it was his partner in the centre of the park who gave the hosts a deserved lead.

Rashford played Alejandro Garnacho into the box and the Argentine winger's shot could only be parried into the air by Caoimhin Kelleher, allowing McTominay to prod in his ninth goal of the campaign in all competitions.

The Liverpool inquest began immediately as United struck an early blow to Klopp's hopes of leaving England with a second FA Cup. Liverpool were firmly second-best early on with little midfield presence and their only glimpses of goal came when Andy Robertson fired well over and Joe Gomez lashed similarly wastefully in his search for a first ever professional goal.

The spritely Man Utd might have gone further ahead when Rasmus Hojlund closed in on goal, but the Danish striker slipped and ballooned his strike safely wide of Kelleher's goal.

Chances arrived at both ends in quick succession around ten minutes before half-time. McTominay searched for his second but could only shoot straight at Kelleher before Luis Diaz thrashed an effort straight at Onana.

Endo looked to have levelled proceedings with a neat finish only for Mohamed Salah to be ruled offside, but despite their somewhat wobbly first-half performance, Liverpool headed into the break with the lead.

World Cup winner Mac Allister had struggled to assert himself but came up with a timely contribution in the 44th minute. Jarell Quansah drove into the area and found Darwin Nunez who laid the ball back to the former Brighton star. Mac Allister's drive was fierce but aided by a deflection off Mainoo which took it beyond Onana's grasp at the near post.

Roughly four minutes later, the visitors had turned the game on its head with a second.

Joe Gomez robbed Bruno Fernandes before his cross eventually wound up with Nunez. The Uruguayan's strike was batted away by Onana but it fell straight to Salah, who smashed the rebound in off the post before celebrating somewhat sheepishly, as if expecting the assistant referee's flag to go up.

It didn't, however, giving Liverpool an unexpected half-time lead as Man Utd crumbled despite their positive start.

The breathless action continued at the start of the second half. Nunez tested Onana at the near post, McTominay couldn't quite reach a dangerous Fernandes cross before Nunez flashed wide on the counter.

Fernandes avoided a second yellow after bringing down Szoboszlai on the edge of United's box before Mac Allister fired over the top from the resulting free-kick. Nunez then proved too slick for Raphael Varane, fooling the Frenchman with a turn but seeing Onana react well to keep his thumping shot from bursting the back of the net.

The Reds Devils became more dishevelled as Liverpool began to impose themselves more forcefully as the tie entered its final 20 minutes.

However, the visitors squandered opening after opening and were made to pay for their profligacy by an unexpected United player.

Substitute Antony had done little of note after his 71st-minute introduction but the Brazilian suddenly embodied R9, swivelling with his back to goal and firing in the far corner beyond Kelleher's reach.

There was sudden energy in the United ranks when they had been inferior for much of the late stages and Liverpool were left hanging on. In fact, Rashford might have won the game before extra time had his finish not slipped wide of the post, though he looked offside regardless.

A poor Conor Bradley clearance handed McTominay possession and allowed Antony to get a shot away, but the rejuvenated winger's effort flew just over the bar. A Cody Gakpo cross then found Mac Allister, but the goalscorer's header drifted wide.

The end-to-end nature of the contest was aided by Man Utd's varied mix of personnel, with Maguire, Diogo Dalot and Victor Lindelof their only remaining defenders, and the more balanced visitors took advantage as Harvey Elliott struck.

The Englishman was given too much time and his shot from distance deflected off Christian Eriksen and nutmegged Maguire, wrong-footing Onana as it crept beyond his dive into the far corner.

However, Nunez gave the ball away horrendously and allowed McTominay to find Rashford, who finally hit the target to draw the Ten Hag's side level before the incredible finale.

Liverpool were caught hopelessly high up the pitch, allowing Garnacho and Diallo to combine on the break before the latter pinged a finish off the post and in to send United through to the semi-finals at Wembley.

Man Utd player ratings (4-2-3-1)

Scott McTominay

GK: Andre Onana - 8/10 - Made some acrobatic saves in the first half but couldn't get to Mac Allister or Salah's strikes. Kept his side in the contest for more impressive stops throughout the game.

RB: Diogo Dalot - 6/10 - Stuck his foot in and was solid enough on his more comfortable side.

CB: Raphael Varane - 6/10 - Ended up on the line when Salah bashed in Liverpool's second. Not exactly robust but didn't do too much wrong.

CB: Victor Lindelof - 5/10 - Couldn't clear effectively and charged around the box like a headless chicken when Liverpool went ahead. Didn't inspire much confidence.

LB: Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 5/10 - Hardly convincing for either goal, seeing Quansah gallop into the box on his side before Fernandes had the ball knicked away from his pass.

CM: Scott McTominay - 8/10 - Showed his adventurous side by getting into the box to poke in the early opener. Didin't offer much control so the game turned into a basketball match, but also notched a crucial assist for Rashford.

CM: Kobbie Mainoo - 7/10 - Displayed such coolness in possession during the first half with some great touches and clever runs. Just lacking some defensive nous.

RW: Alejandro Garnacho - 7/10 - Looked frustrated after being ignored a few times when well placed out wide. His shot helped force McTominay's opener and he later set up Diallo's winner.

AM: Bruno Fernandes - 7/10 - Quick free-kick set Rashford away before McTominay arrived to score. Walked the tightrope of a yellow card but was as committed as ever, playing through injury in extra time.

LW: Marcus Rashford - 7/10 - Was involved in some electric passages early on, though his influence definitely dropped markedly afterwards. Was pretty rusty in front of goal but finally scored when his side needed him most.

ST: Rasmus Hojlund - 5/10 - Had one decent opening to get a shot away but was largely uninvolved on his return from injury.

Substitutes

SUB: Antony (71' for Hojlund) - 7/10 - Definitely his best performance of the season, bagging United's late equaliser and looking much more threatening than usual.

SUB: Harry Maguire (71 for Wan-Bissaka) - 7/10 - Played as an auxiliary striker at times and nearly forced an opening with his brutish size.

SUB: Christian Eriksen (80' for Mainoo) - 6/10 - Clipped some dangerous balls over Liverpool's defence for the attackers to chase after.

SUB: Amad Diallo (85' for Varane) - 7/10 - Showed dangerous bursts of pace and eventually put it all together by scoring the winner. Was also sent off, but it was probably worth it.

SUB: Mason Mount (105' for Lindelof) - 6/10 - Made his long-awaited return from injury in the second half of extra time,

Subs not used: Tom Heaton, Willy Kambwala, Omari Forson, Sofyan Amrabat.

Manager

Erik ten Hag - 7/10 - Will no doubt be frustrated that lapses in concentration cost his side goals, having seen them start the contest so well. Made changes that worked with Antony and Diallo both netting.

GK: Caoimhin Kelleher - 6/10 - Might have done better with Garnacho's effort which led to McTominay's opener. Made some strong saves otherwise.

RB: Joe Gomez - 6/10 - Great challenge on Fernandes helped Salah put Liverpool ahead. Switched over to the left and was generally fine.

CB: Jarell Quansah - 5/10 - A little unaware before McTominay struck but played a decent role in Mac Allister's equaliser with his drive into the box.

CB: Virgil van Dijk - 6/10 - Was mainly calm throughout, though understandably looked more ragged as the game approached 120 minutes.

LB: Andy Robertson - 6/10 - Committed at the back and made a couple of strong challenges.

CM: Alexis Mac Allister - 7/10 - Had trouble getting to grips with Mainoo before coming up with a vital equaliser. Made amends by bringing Liverpool level and soon started creating chances at will.

CM: Wataru Endo - 5/10 - Swept in before seeing an offside flag raised. Needless to say, this wasn't a game where defensive midfielders thrived.

CM: Dominik Szoboszlai - 6/10 - Became more comfortable as United's first-half energy waned, finding more space for pops at goal later on.

RW: Mohamed Salah - 7/10 - Not overly involved but was razor-sharp when needed to put his side ahead.

ST: Darwin Nunez - 7/10 - Provoked enough panic in the Man Utd box and assisted Mac Allister's equaliser but might have done better with a number of opportunities. Gave away possession before Rashford struck in extra time.

LW: Luis Diaz - 7/10 - Buzzed around with plenty of ambition and constantly ghosted past opposition defenders with his precise dribbling.

Substitutes

SUB: Harvey Elliott (72 for Szoboszlai) - 7/10 - Looked to have scored the winner with a deflected strike.

SUB: Conor Bradley (76' for Robertson) - 6/10 - Didn't shirk any challenges and got an assist.

SUB: Cody Gakpo (77' for Salah) - 5/10 - A little wasteful in possession.

SUB: Kostas Tsimikas (101' for Gomez) - 5/10

SUB: Bobby Clark (114' for Diaz) - N/A

Subs not used: Adrian, James McConnell, Ryan Gravenberch, Jayden Danns.
