After a promising 2022/23 campaign, 2023/24 has made it clear that sweeping changes are a necessity at Manchester United Football Club (again).

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's purchase of a stake will ensure that these necessary changes may actually happen this time though, with big promises already being made by the new ownership group.

To give them a bit of a helping hand, we at 90min have sifted through Man Utd's bloated squad and assessed which players they should keep, sell, loan and release this summer...

KEEP

GK: Andre Onana - Man Utd's number one, big summer signing, and actually playing well recently. Of course they keep Onana.

GK: Altay Bayindir - We have seen very little of Bayindir so far, but his international pedigree suggests that he's a solid backup for Onana and can slot in effectively when needed.

GK: Tom Heaton - The token 'vibes' third choice goalkeeper. Every club needs one apparently.

DEF: Victor Lindelof - The Sweden international isn't a first choice option for Erik ten Hag by any stretch. That doesn't mean he doesn't have a valuable part to play in his plans moving forward though, as his versatility has been key due to the injury bug that's swept across the Man Utd backline over the last year.

DEF: Lisandro Martinez - Manchester United are a completely different, and much better, team when Martinez is fit and available. He's one of the most important players at the club.

DEF: Diogo Dalot - After finally getting his chance, Dalot is now widely considered to be one of the better right-backs in the Premier League. The Portugal international has been one of Man Utd's best players so far this season.

DEF: Tyrell Malacia - A lot was expected of Malacia heading into the 2023/24 campaign, however due to a serious injury he hasn't kicked a ball. There's hope that if he can get back to full fitness that he can be a valuable player for Man Utd next season.

DEF: Luke Shaw - The left-back is a brilliant, if quite injury prone, player. He's one of the pillars of the current Man Utd squad.

DEF: Aaron Wan-Bissaka - On one hand, you can make a case for trying to shift on Wan-Bissaka due to the clear offensive deficiencies in his game. On the other, you can make a case for keeping Wan-Bissaka because of how he excels in the defensive third. In this article, we've gone for the latter.

DEF: Jonny Evans - Look he might retire, but if he doesn't, why not keep him? He's barely put a foot wrong all season.

MID: Mason Mount - A huge signing for the Red Devils who has, so far, massively flopped due to injuries. There's a good player in there somewhere though.

MID: Bruno Fernandes - Captain. Best footballer at the club. Keep for sure.

MID: Kobbie Mainoo - The shining light of the 2023/24 season for Manchester United. Kobbie Mainoo is genuinely outrageous talent.

MID: Scott McTominay - McSauce, Mad Dog McTom. For the nicknames alone, he has to stay.

FWD: Amad Diallo - Although he hasn't played much due to injury, Amad provided Man Utd's fans with the moment of the season through his extra-time winner against Liverpool. He's a very good player, and deserves a chance at Old Trafford.

FWD: Marcus Rashford - After a career-best campaign, the wheels slightly fell off for Rashford in 2023/24. That said, they'd be mad to sell him. He's proven in the past he's a match-winner on his day.

FWD: Rasmus Hojlund - The young striker has had the weight of the world on his shoulders over the last eight months, but he certainly hasn't buckeld under the pressure. His run of form in the early months of 2024, prior to a short injury absence, was proof of his talent.

FWD: Alejandro Garnacho - One of the most talented young players in plying their trade anywhere in Europe. He's key to Man Utd's future.

LOAN

DEF: Willy Kambwala - The 19-year-old prospect needs minutes under his belt, and a loan spell will allow for that.

MID: Facundo Pellistri - The Uruguayan has impressed on loan this season, and another one next season could up his price before Man Utd inevitably sell. But he's out of contract in 2025, so the club would need to sort him a fresh deal if that is to be the plan.

MID: Daniel Gore - Another youngster who needs minutes. His loan spell at Port Vale hasn't gone to plan due to injury, but another one could prove to be more successful next season.

MID: Omari Forson - Yep, you guessed it: a youngster who needs senior minutes.

FWD: Shola Shoretire - You know the drill with this section by now.

FWD: Antony - Cameo against Liverpool aside, Antony has been bloody awful for most of his time in Manchester, particularly this season. A loan move might do his value - which has plummeted because he's not played well at all - the world of good.

SELL

DEF: Harry Maguire - Erik ten Hag wanted to get rid of him last summer, and we'd imagine he'll want the same this summer too. While he has played better since dropping down the pecking order, it's clear that he doesn't have a long term future at the club as a starter.

DEF: Alvaro Fernandez - Benfica retain a buy option this summer at the end of his current loan deal, and we'd be surprised if they don't take it.

MID: Donny van de Beek - Another player that's out on loan with their current club having an option to buy. Van de Beek has actually played for Frankfurt at times since joining in January, so he might stay there long term.

MID: Casemiro - 'His legs have gone' has been the prevailing analysis of Casemiro in recent months. It's time to sell to a Saudi club, we think.

MID: Hannibal Mejbri - Currently enduring a disastrous spell at Sevilla. It's clear that Hannibal isn't at the required level to be a star player at Man Utd - or even a squad player to be honest.

MID: Christian Eriksen - An admirable stop-gap during the 2022/23 campaign, Mainoo's breakthrough has made Eriksen a rather unnecessary player to have in the squad now.

FWD: Jadon Sancho - Looks, it's never going to work out at Man Utd; especially when Ten Hag is in charge. At this stage, the best thing to do is to cut your losses on Sancho.

FWD: Mason Greenwood - Get rid. Immediately.

RELEASE

Anthony Martial
Time to go / Chris Brunskill/Fantasista/GettyImages

DEF: Raphael Varane - It looks like Man Utd are not going to trigger a team option to extend Varane's contract, and due to his patchy (to say the very least) injury record, it's easy to see why.

DEF: Brandon Williams - File under: 'simply not good enough to play for Man Utd'.

MID: Sofyan Amrabat - File under: 'simply not good enough to play for any football club ever'.

FWD: Anthony Martial - The Ballon d'Or clause will not be triggered. Martial has been a bust. It's time to move on.
