West Ham took revenge for their Premier League defeat to Manchester United on Sunday by knocking the Red Devils out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Manuel Lanzini scored the only goal of the game to condemn Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side to an EFL Cup exit at the first hurdle.

The visitors started strongly and took a deserved lead inside 10 minutes. Ryan Fredericks did fantastically in the build-up, motoring to the byline before pulling it back for Manuel Lanzini to slide home.

Soon after. Jesse Lingard had a strong shout for a penalty turned down by Jon Moss, with Mark Noble grabbing a handful of his shirt (and shorts) on his way to the deck inside the area.

Lingard was involved heavily throughout the half, having a pair of good efforts kept out by Alphonse Areola, while Alex Telles also went close.

After the break United pressed for an equaliser with Diogo Dalot fizzing a shot just wide and Sancho also threatening. Substitute Mason Greenwood then had a one-on-one well kept out by Areola.

Bruno Fernandes was then brought on as the hosts grew increasingly desperate, but they could not break down the Hammers' stubborn rearguard. It was in fact West Ham who went closest to grabbing the second goal before full time with Andriy Yarmolenko and Noble missing great chances.

Here are your player ratings for both sides from Old Trafford...

Manchester United player ratings

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Dean Henderson

Dean Henderson (GK) - 5/10 - Not a lot he could do about the goal, which was one of his only notable involvements. Came up for a corner at the end, which was fun.

Diogo Dalot (RB) - 5/10 -
Looked rusty at times, making the wrong decision in the final third on one too many occasions.

Victor Lindelof (CB) - 7/10 -
Terrific in the air. Passing was good too.

Eric Bailly (CB) - 6/10 -
A couple of rash decision but he did well for the most part.

Alex Telles (LB) - 5/10 -
Beaten far too easily by Fredericks in the lead up to the first goal.

2. Midfielders

Manuel Lanzini, Donny van de Beek

Juan Mata (CM) - 6/10 - Not bad. His delivery was excellent all evening, as was his passing.

Nemanja Matic (CM) - 5/10 - Rolled back the years with a few driving runs forward. Faded as things progressed.

Donny van de Beek (CM) - 5/10 - A few moments of real promise but largely anonymous. The usual, then.

3. Forwards

Jadon Sancho (RW) - 5/10 - Quiet after an early flourish. Things still aren't quite clicking for him at Old Trafford but there were promising signs.

Anthony Martial (ST) - 5/10 - Rusty. Another game without a goal, which is worrying. Very worrying in fact.

Jesse Lingard (LW) - 6/10 - Always looking to make something happen. Should have had a penalty in the first half. Faded after the break.

4. Substitutes

Mason Greenwood - 5/10 - Should have scored a one-on-one seconds after coming on.

Bruno Fernandes - 6/10 - At the centre of most things.

Anthony Elanga - N/A

Alphonse Areola (GK) - 7/10 - Flapped at a few things early on but more than redeemed himself with some top saves.

Ryan Fredericks (RB) - 7/10 - Created the opener with a fine piece of skill and a great pull back. Forced off with injury soon after.

Craig Dawson (CB) - 8/10 - Colossal. Made a real claim for a place in the first team.

Issa Diop (CB) - 8/10 - A behemoth. Dominated the ground and air, a few minor slip-ups aside.

Ben Johnson (LB) - 7/10 - Mature performance despite his tender years.

6. Midfielders

Anthony Martial, Mark Noble, Alex Kral

Alex Kral (CM) - 7/10 - Involved higher up the pitch than he might have expected. Did a good marking job on Bruno Fernandes when he came on.

Mark Noble (CM) - 3/10 - Clearly fouled Lingard in the box but got away with it. It's his last season for the Hammers and it's starting to show as he is getting slower and slower. Missed a sitter too.

Manuel Lanzini (AM) - 7/10 - Excellent, composed finish. Knitted things together when West Ham broke forward.

7. Forwards

Arthur Masuaku, Mason Greenwood

Andriy Yarmolenko (RW) - 5/10 - Fairly quiet. Has not done his first-team prospects much good, particularly after missing an absolute sitter in the closing stages.

Jarrod Bowen (ST) - 6/10 - Pressed relentlessly and got in behind a few times.

Arthur Masuaku (LW) - 6/10 - Always unpredictable and stuck to his defensive duties diligently.

8. Substitutes

Vladimir Coufal - 8/10 - Did not put a foot wrong after replacing Fredericks.

Pablo Fornals - 6/10 - Neat and tidy.

Nikola Vlasic - N/A
