As the traditional top four continues to stretch to include more Premier League heavyweights, games between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have more riding on them than ever before.

Some thrilling matches have been played out between these two sides over the years, especially in recent seasons where Man City have fought for titles with Tottenham doing their best to reach the same level.

With some brilliant players on display each time Man City and Tottenham face off, take a look at six of the best recent meetings between these sides and their overall head-to-head record.

Any game where one of the best sides in the league is beaten 6-0 by a direct rival raises eyebrows. That happened to this sorry Tottenham team in 2013/14, sitting just ninth under Andre Villas-Boas when the match at the Etihad came around.

City were fourth but would go on to win the Premier League title and showed their attacking teeth here with a rampant display that saw the first goal scored in 14 seconds as Jesus Navas made it 1-0 to Man City.

It was 3-0 by half-time and a mish-mash Spurs side with players like Roberto Soldado, Lewis Holtby and Paulinho were powerless to stop City. Sergio Aguero grabbed two goals, as did Navas, with Alvaro Negredo netting once. Sandro also scored an own goal to help the hosts out.

Tottenham would get their revenge a couple of years later, although not by a 6-0 scoreline.

With Mauricio Pochettino at the helm, this 4-1 Spurs victory was a surprising result as Man City were higher up the table having enjoyed a better start to the Premier League season.

Kevin De Bruyne put City ahead in the first half as the visitors looked to secure another victory at White Hart Lane, but Tottenham rallied. Eric Dier equalised just before half-time before second-half strikes from Toby Alderweireld, Harry Kane and Erik Lamela completed a superb day for Tottenham fans and one to forget for Manuel Pellegrini.

It was a sign of things to come for Tottenham as they ended up being the closest title challengers to Leicester City for most of the season but still managed to finish third.

Man City may have won this game, but they certainly didn't win the war.

This was one of the most dramatic Champions League ties in recent memory, largely thanks to what went on in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium.

Tottenham won the first game 1-0 in north London despite Man City being firm favourites to make it into the semi-finals. The return fixture in Manchester had the most ridiculous start as four goals were scored in the first 11 minutes.

Raheem Sterling quickly put City ahead before Son Heung-min scored twice to swing the advantage back in Tottenham's favour at 3-1 up on aggregate. Bernardo Silva then immediately made it 2-2 on the night.

Another Sterling goal before the break meant it was 3-3 on aggregate at half-time, with Tottenham heading through on away goals. Both sides enjoyed chances in a ridiculously open game before Aguero took one of those opportunities to put Man City ahead on aggregate.

However, an unlikely Spurs hero in Fernando Llorente bundled in what proved to be Tottenham's winner on aggregate. A lengthy VAR check ensued to ensure he had not handled a corner into the net and replays showed the ball hit Llorente's hip with his arm in very close proximity.

The drama wasn't done there, though. The Man City onslaught arrived and Sterling hit the back of the net in the 93rd minute, sparking scenes of jubilation at the Etihad with Pep Guardiola's side heading into the semi-finals.

However, VAR got involved and offside was given against Aguero in the build-up. Tottenham went through on away goals and would reach the final, where they were beaten by Liverpool.

Coming into this game, Man City were top of the Premier League and Tottenham were down in sixth. Dejan Kulusevski put Tottenham 1-0 up in the first half with his first goal for the club but Ilkay Gundogan ensured it was 1-1 at half-time.

Fans of Liverpool were watching extremely closely as any dropped points from Man City would give Jurgen Klopp's side an opening in the title race. Kane put Tottenham back in front with half an hour to go before the Cityzens looked to have snatched a point when Riyad Mahrez scored a penalty in the 92nd minute.

Kane had other ideas, though, as he netted a 95th-minute header to win the game 3-2.

Sometimes Man City perfectly embody the sleeping giant. They can start slowly but eventually gather enough momentum in a short period of time to win games emphatically.

That's what happened here as a Spurs side ready to fall apart under Antonio Conte took a surprising 2-0 lead with goals from Kulusevski and Emerson Royal coming on the stroke of half-time.

That clearly angered City as the hosts scored four times in the second half with Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland getting one each and Riyad Mahrez netting two.

The first competitive meeting between Guardiola and alleged copycat Ange Postecoglou provided an extremely entertaining and open fixture filled with glorious goals.

Son scored at both ends in the opening 15 minutes before Phil Foden finished off a flowing move to put the treble winners in control. Giovani Lo Celso fired in from the edge of the box but Jack Grealish scored what looked like being the winner in the 81st minute.

City failed to make the most of their chances throughout the game and felt another Tottenham sucker-punch as Kulusevski rose above Nathan Ake to head in the equaliser.
