Manchester City and RB Leipzig are two of Europe's relatively new kids on the block.

For the last half decade or so, they have regularly reached the latter stages of the Champions League and have become renowned for the talent at their disposal.

Due to their respective histories, there is not an abundance of examples of these two teams playing each other. That being said, the competition does seem to be throwing them together more often than you'd expect.

Here is the complete history of Man City vs RB Leipzig.

In their first meeting, City smashed Leipzig 6-3 at the Etihad in what was the beginning of the end for Jesse Marsch in his brief tenure in Germany. Nathan Ake opened the scoring for Pep Guardiola's side before a Nordi Mukiele own goal put the hosts 2-0 up.

Christopher Nkunku's two strikes, either side of a Riyad Mahrez penalty, made it 3-2 just after the half-time interval, before Jack Grealish restored City's two-goal advantage. Nkunku sealed his hat-trick with just 20 minutes remaining, but it was to no avail as Joao Cancelo and Gabriel Jesus sealed a convincing home win.

This was ultimately a dead rubber for City, who'd already topped their group ahead of Paris Saint-Germain ahead of their trip to Saxony on the final matchday.

Despite his side's status, Guardiola deployed a strong starting XI but they'd fall to a 2-1 defeat in front of no fans at the Red Bull Arena.

Kyle Walker was sent off late on for the visitors after Riyad Mahrez had halved City's deficit following strikes from Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai and Andre Silva.

Guardiola opted for caution away from home in this round of 16 tie, and for good reason given what would go down in the return leg.

City were seemingly going to cruise after Mahrez handed them a first half lead, but the hosts came on strong after the restart and eventually secured a deserved equaliser through future City defender Josko Gvardiol.

The Croatian's effort, though, would count for very little.

Leipzig entered the second leg harbouring hopes of pulling off an upset, but they'd instead succumb to a fearsome Nordic blitzkrieg.

Erling Haaland, subdued in the first leg, wreaked havoc at the Etihad amid a beatdown of the German side. The City hitman became just the third player to score five times in a single Champions League game as the Cityzens cruised into the quarter-finals off the back of a 7-0 rout.

Having scored five in 35 minutes, Haaland was then withdrawn with just under half-an-hour remaining. Who knows how many goals he could've racked up had he played the entirety.

The two sides were once again drawn against each other in Group G of the 2023/24 competition, and Leipzig once again gave a good account of themselves on home soil.

City produced a measured and controlled display for the most part, but Lois Openda, who was scoring for Lens last season and had no Haaland-induced scars, restored parity and it looked as if Die Roten Bullen would secure a point against the holders.

However, Guardiola's side rallied late to seal a 3-1 win. Julian Alvarez scored the go-ahead goal with six minutes remaining before Jeremy Doku got on the scoresheet in stoppage time.
