Real Madrid have announced a new contract for club legend Luka Modric, extending his stay at the Bernabeu for at least another year until 2024.

It takes Modric, who joined Real from Tottenham in 2012, into a 12th season with Los Blancos.

The Croatian veteran is set to surpass 500 appearances for Los Blancos in the early stages of next season, having played 488 times so far, and has won 23 trophies with the club including five Champions Leagues.

Modric joins long-time midfield partner Toni Kroos in pledging his future to Real following confirmation of the German’s new contract announcement earlier this month.

90min reported in May that Modric had decided to remain at the Bernabeu. That choice was made despite competition for places from the likes of Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde. Jude Bellingham has since arrived to add even more star power to Carlo Ancelotti's midfield.

Dani Ceballos, new club captain Nacho and the returning Brahim Diaz have also penned new deals this summer. However, Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio and Mariano Diaz have all moved on as free agents, with Eden Hazard released from his contract a year early.

Despite turning 37 in the early weeks of the season, Modric remained important to Real during the 2022/23 campaign. Although the midfielder started fewer La Liga games than in previous years, he still made 52 appearances across all competitions.

Modric will be 38 shortly after 2023/24 gets going and closing in on his 39th birthday by the time his new deal comes to an end next year.
