Luka Modric has been offered the chance to join Carlo Ancelotti's coaching staff if he chooses to retire this summer, according to a report.

Modric has played an increasingly reduced role under Ancelotti over the past 18 months, with the 38-year-old being held to just 11 La Liga starts at this point in the campaign, and has been tipped to walk away from the Santiago Bernabeu when his contract expires in the summer.

Retirement is obviously an option for Modric but the veteran midfielder has never hinted at hanging up his boots and has spoken openly of his desire to play more this season.

However, should Modric choose to retire, The Athletic state he will have the chance to join Ancelotti's coaching staff.

It is claimed that Ancelotti first discussed the idea with Modric around two months ago but the Croatia international initially turned down the offer, citing a desire to continue playing beyond the end of the current campaign.

The offer remains on the table but is not currently under consideration, with AS adding that Modric's current focus is on continuing his playing career.

Modric is prepared to delay a decision on his future until the end of the season as he seeks one last hurrah with the Croatian national team at this summer's European Championships. He does not want his club future to distract him from the tournament.

An extension with Real Madrid has not been formally ruled out but is seen as unlikely at this point, with the Spanish side moving in a different direction tactically which does not particularly suit Modric at this stage of his career.

Modric has attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League in the past, while boyhood side Dinamo Zagreb have confirmed their wish for a reunion.
