Liverpool are the favourites to win the Europa League this season and have been handed a quarter-final tie against Serie A outfit Atalanta.

Jurgen Klopp's side remain in the running for three trophies in his final season but have arguably the clearest run to more silverware in Europe's secondary competition.

Atalanta have very little in the way of European pedigree but have become familiar to football fans for their swashbuckling attacking football in modern times. That said, their recent ascension to the top leagues of continental competition means prior meetings with the Reds are few.

Here's the complete head-to-head record between Liverpool and Atalanta.

The first ever meeting between Atalanta and Liverpool came when the pair were drawn in the same Champions League group for the 2020/21 tournament.

With no supporters in attendance, Diogo Jota scored twice to make it 2-0 at half-time, after which Atalanta completely crumbled. Further goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane and another from Jota completing his hat-trick meant it was 5-0 by the 54th minute.

Atalanta had four points from three games when their trip to Anfield rolled around on matchday four, while Liverpool were cruising with nine points already on the board and qualification almost assured.

However, the form book was thrown out of the window as Atalanta won 2-0 at Anfield in one of the club's greatest ever results.

Liverpool had plenty of injuries and started the game with a back four of Kostas Tsimikas, Rhys Williams, Joel Matip and Neco Williams. The visitors capitalised on the Reds' many absences and enjoyed all the major chances before Josip Ilicic got on the end of Papu Gomez's cross and poked in after an hour.

Robin Gosens scored a well-worked goal a few minutes later and Atalanta held out for all three points.

It was not too important a result for Liverpool as they still finished top of the group, but these three points were crucial for Atalanta as they snuck into the last 16 at Ajax's expense. They were then beaten by Real Madrid, who in turn knocked Liverpool out in the quarter-finals.
