Liverpool learn extent of Thiago hip injury

Liverpool midfielder Thiago will not feature in their remaining five Premier League games of the season due to a hip injury.

The Spaniard has plagued by fitness issues since moving to Anfield from Bayern Munich in 2020 and hasn't started a game since early April, making four substitute appearances against Arsenal, Leeds, Nottingham Forest and West Ham.

He did not make the Reds' squad for their 4-3 victory over Tottenham on Sunday and the decision has been made for the former Barcelona star to undergo surgery on his hip.

Thiago will now miss their final league games of the season against Fulham, Brentford, Leicester, Aston Villa and Southampton.

Naby Keita and Stefan Bajcetic are already out of commission with injuries, leaving Fabinho, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott to start in the win over Spurs. Liverpool face Fulham on Wednesday night. Jordan Henderson is another option to come into the side.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has already confirmed forward Diogo Jota has a bruised rib and is doubtful to face the Cottagers, while forward Roberto Fimino is also absent.

Thiago has now missed 56 games since joining Liverpool. Injuries have affected their squad availability considerably over the past two seasons and midfield is an area they are expected to target during the summer transfer window.
