Lille beat PSG to Ligue 1 title with victory over Angers

Lille's fairytale season has had its happy ending, as Christophe Galtier's team pipped PSG to the post and lifted the Ligue 1 title for the first time in 10 years.

It was all on the line heading into the final round of fixtures, but the leaders took the drama out of the final day by recording a fairly straightforward 2-1 victory over Angers.

Lille's draw with St Etienne last weekend ensured the fate of the title would go down to the wire after PSG did their bit by dismantling Reims 4-0. Mauricio Pochettino's side took care of their business on the final day too - an own goal from Romain Faivre and a strike from Kylian Mbappe sealed a win over Brest that meant Lille had to win to be crowned champions.

Despite a late scare from Angelo Fulgini, though, they got it over the line and sealed a famous victory in the north west of France.

The party started with just nine minutes on the clock when Renato Sanches cut through the Angers midfield like a hot knife through butter and played in Jonathan David, who calmly finished for his 13th of the season.

It sparked wild celebrations among the travelling ranks as they were beginning to sense their long drought without a league title might just be coming to an end.

And that looked all-but confirmed shortly before half-time when Burak Yilmaz stepped up to slot home a penalty and put the game out of Angers' reach, though they did get one back late in the day to set up a nervy couple of minutes.

It was a heartbreaker for PSG who did all they could to ask the question, but they did go in knowing that even a victory might not be enough. Pochettino has been unable to arrest their patchy domestic form since his arrival in January and that defeat to Lille back in April ultimately proved the decisive blow.

Monaco went into the final day knowing they stood an outside chance of upsetting the apple cart. Two points behind PSG and three behind Lille before a ball was kicked, they could technically have won the title in the event of a freakish goal swing, but they stumbled to a 0-0 draw with Lens.

It wouldn't have made a difference anyway, however. Nevertheless, a point was enough to beat Lyon to the final Champions League spot after they lost 3-2 at home to Nice.
