Leicester have announced the signing of defender Jannik Vestergaard from Southampton on a three year contract for a fee believed to be around £15m.

Injuries to both Wesley Fofana and Jonny Evans left Brendan Rodgers in need of another centre back and they've now landed Denmark international Vestergaard, who featured in his country's run to the semi finals of Euro 2020.

He told the club's website: "I’m very happy and I’m really excited to get going. It’s a special club that has done very well over many years and I think the project is very, very exciting, even from the outside looking in. To be a part of it is a big thing for me.

"I know a couple of the players, and  and  I know very well and get along with off the pitch, so that’s going to be very easy. Just from my first impression of the guys in the dressing room, they’re a good bunch, and I’m sure I’ll settle in very quickly."

Southampton added in a statement: "The club would like to wish Jannik well for the future and thank him for his efforts during his time as a Southampton player."

Vestergaard made 79 appearances in all competitions for Southampton, scoring four goals and generally impressing at the heart of their defence. It leaves the Saints with the likes of Jan Bednarek, Mohammed Salisu and Jack Stephens as their main options at centre back.

Southampton also lost Danny Ings to Aston Villa, though they did recently complete the signing of Blackburn striker Adam Armstrong.

29-year-old Vestergaard is Leicester's latest signing in an impressive summer of recruitment thus far. Patson Daka, Boubakary Soumare and Ryan Bertrand have also been brought in over the past few months.

Leicester's first game of the Premier League season sees them take on Wolves at the King Power Stadium, while Southampton are in action against Everton at Goodison Park, with both games taking place on Saturday.
