Wes Morgan to retire as Christian Fuchs also leaves Leicester
Leicester City captain Wes Morgan will retire at the end of the season, bringing an end to a career that has yielded more than 730 club appearances, 30 international caps, as well as Premier League and FA Cup winners’ medals from 2016 and 2021 respectively.
Veteran left-back Christian Fuchs is also leaving the club at the end of the campaign, with the Austrian becoming a Leicester cult hero for his role in the 2015/16 title winning season.
Morgan, who joined Leicester from Nottingham Forest in 2012, will continue to work with the Foxes in addition to his role as a member of the PFA Players’ board.
The 37-year-old centre-back first captained Leicester to the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League in 2014. He made his top flight debut that year at the age of 30 and was instrumental in the miraculous escape from relegation, which then directly paved the way for the most unlikely to Premier League title wins in 2016.
Morgan played for Leicester in the Champions League in 2016/17, reaching the quarter finals of the competition. His international career saw him play 30 times for Jamaica, including at two Copa America tournaments and one CONCACAF Gold Cup.
His playing time has decreased with age in recent seasons and his appearance off the bench in the FA Cup final was his first for Leicester since December. He will be given an emotional send off when the Foxes host Tottenham on the final day of the season on Sunday, which will also be the first game at King Power Stadium with fans in more than 14 months.
“Wes has been one of Leicester City’s greatest servants, leading the team through the club’s most successful era and helping to set the standards that have pushed the club forward,” said Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha.
“A big brother to everyone he has played with, a strong representative of the squad and a valuable source of counsel to managers and senior executives in the club, his contribution has been enormous.
“Wes has shown throughout his Leicester City career that he has a great deal to offer away from the pitch. I’m excited to see how we can help him shape his career after football and how the club can continue to benefit from his experience, knowledge and passion for the game.”
Fuchs arrived from Schalke as a free agent in the summer of 2015 and was a regular starter for three seasons and has largely been a back-up player since. At 35, there has been no announcement of his retirement, suggesting he could find a new club and keep on playing.
Leicester have also confirmed the departure of Matty James after nine years at the club. The midfielder played a major role in the 2013/14 promotion season, only for long-term injury in 2015 to wreck his continued development. He spent this season on loan at Barnsley and Coventry.
