Harvey Barnes signs new four-year deal at Leicester

Leicester winger Harvey Barnes has signed a new four-year contract at King Power Stadium.

The 23-year-old was in scintillating form during the 2020/21 season and was arguably in contention for a call-up to England's Euro 2020 squad, had he not been struck down by injury towards the end of the season.

Indeed, he made his Three Lions debut against Wales in October 2020, and was one of the Premier League's most consistent performers until a knee injury ruled him out of the season's run-in, causing him to miss the FA Cup final win over Manchester City and the European Championships.

Now back fit, Barnes started Leicester's opening day victory over Wolves - a 1-0 win courtesy of a superb Jamie Vardy finish - amid rumours of potential interest from Liverpool.

That speculation have now been put to bed after the club confirmed that Barnes has signed a new four-year contract, keeping him at the club he joined at the age of nine until 2025.

"I’ve been here for so many years now, it feels like home. For me, it was a no-brainer. Of course, I wanted to extend my stay here," Barnes told Leicester's club channel. “It’s been something that’s been going on in the background and to sign now is great. It’s right at the start of a new season as well, which I know everyone is excited about.”

Barnes has passed the 100 appearances barrier for Leicester and netted 21 goals in all competitions, while he's also enjoyed loan spells at MK Dons, Barnsley and West Brom during his development years.

The latter move is the one that propelled Barnes into the limelight, when he starred for West Brom during the first half of the 2018/19 Championship campaign. He was recalled by Leicester in January 2019 after scoring nine times in 26 appearances, and has been a first-team regular in the East Midlands ever since.

Barnes' new deal reflects Leicester's growing status in the game, which has been highlighted by another excellent transfer window. Boubakary Soumare, Patson Daka and Jannik Vestergaard are just three of Brendan Rodgers' new arrivals, while the club has thus far fought off interest in the likes of Youri Tielemans and James Maddison.
