Newcastle United were no match for Leicester on Sunday as James Maddison inspired the Foxes to a simple 4-0 victory.

Leicester were in control in the first half but struggled to make much in front of goal, but their continued efforts resulted in a penalty in the 38th minute as Maddison went to ground under little duress from an unfortunate Jamaal Lascelles. One of those that technically is a penalty but absolutely shouldn't be.

Up stepped Youri Tielemans, whose thunderous effort flew into the back of the net to give Leicester the lead they deserved.

The second came ten minutes into the second half. Harvey Barnes' unselfish cut-back put it on a plate for Patson Daka, who tapped home into an empty net.

Newcastle had their own half-chances but were really wasteful in the final third. A lot of their efforts came from range and Kasper Schmeichel barely had to get his gloves dirty.

The goalkeeper did, however, need the toe of his boot to keep out a woeful backpass from Timothy Castagne that had him scampering back towards his goal and desperately lunging to protect his clean sheet.

Leicester went straight down the other end and thumped home a third, with Tielemans netting from close range following some good work from Maddison and Daka.

Maddison added another with five minutes to go, combining with Daka well to fire home past Dubravka to seal a comfortable victory for Brendan Rodgers' men.

Kasper Schmeichel (GK) - 6/10 - Saved what would have been an outstanding own goal from Castagne.

Timothy Castagne (RB) - 6/10 - Booked for an early challenge on Saint-Maximin but showed composure to deal with the winger after that. Bailed out by Schmeichel for his brainfart.

Jonny Evans (CB) - N/A - Forced off with a hamstring injury inside five minutes.

Caglar Soyuncu (CB) - 6/10 - Some pretty unimpressive touches but was never really put under pressure.

Luke Thomas (LB) - 6/10 - Made a nice block early on and did his best to try and get involved in attack.

2. Midfielders

Wilfred Ndidi (DM) - 6/10 - Stepped into centre-back to replace Evans so saw his role limited. Did well, all things considered.

James Maddison (RM) - 9/10 - Two great assists and a classy goal, although he wasn't popular on Twitter after buying his penalty.

Youri Tielemans (CM) - 8/10 - Impressed on his 100th Premier League appearance. Made an impact at both ends and thumped home his two goals.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (CM) - 6/10 - Solid and unspectacular. Brought real energy.

Harvey Barnes (LM) - 6/10 - A nice run for Daka's goal. Unselfish. Replaced with 20 to go.

3. Forward

Patson Daka (ST) - 7/10 - Didn't get into the game much in the first half but woke up after the break. A nice finish and good work for the third and fourth goals.

Fabian Schär

Martin Dubravka (GK) - 5/10 - A poor pass which invited pressure in the build-up to the penalty. Couldn't do a lot about the goals.

Javier Manquillo (RB) - 5/10 - Did a pretty good job of limiting Barnes' involvement.

Fabian Schar (CB) - 4/10 - Took a little too long with his passes at times. Sluggish.

Jamaal Lascelles (CB) - 2/10 - Very unfortunate for the penalty but was dreadful throughout the rest of the game. Like a rabbit in headlights at times.

Jamal Lewis (LB) - 3/10 - Didn't enjoy his battle with Maddison at all.

6. Midfielders

Allan Saint-Maximin

Miguel Almiron (RM) - 5/10 - Did a whole lot of running and not a whole lot else. Replaced on the hour mark.

Jonjo Shelvey (CM) - 3/10 - Laid a risky elbow on Maddison and looked a little out of his depth throughout.

Joe Willock (CM) - 2/10 - It's almost as if judging a player on seven decent games is a bad idea.

Allan Saint-Maximin (LM) - 4/10 - Clearly still the focal point but offered very little Contained well by Leicester's back line.

7. Forwards

Callum Wilson, Wilfred Ndidi

Joelinton (ST) - 4/10 - Given a free role to drift between midfield and attack but didn't make use of it at all. Impressive that he was everywhere and yet nowhere at the same time.

Callum Wilson (ST) - 5/10 - Offered more in defence than he did in attack.

8. Substitutes

Jacob Murphy - 5/10 - Brought energy but no quality.

Ryan Fraser - 5/10 - Ditto.

Matt Richie - N/A
