Manchester United winger Leah Galton has been named Barclays WSL player of the month for January, while boss Marc Skinner has scooped the manager of the month award again.

It is the second successive month in which United have swept both individual WSL awards, with Skinner also winning the December manager prize - the December player gong went to Ella Toone.

January was another month in which United won both WSL games they played to keep up the pressure in the title race and the battle for Champions League places.

Skinner’s team scored eight goals without conceding across their two league games, a continuation from their excellent form in December.

January began with a 5-0 thrashing of a Birmingham side who had shocked leaders Arsenal a week earlier. Galton was on fire from the start in that one, assisting the opening goal for Katie Zelem and then scoring twice herself before the clock had even reached 20 minutes.

The United winger also found the net in the following outing. She got the third of the game from close-range in a statement performance against Tottenham, who are among the group of rival clubs also vying to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Galton has returned to her best form during the winter after struggling with injury in the second half of last season and taking a little time at the start of 2021/22 to build her match sharpness.

Having now started February by drawing away against Arsenal, United are back in action in another huge WSL game on Sunday when they travel across town to Manchester City. With City five points behind, the derby could have huge implications in the Champions League race for both clubs.

Meanwhile, Chelsea will host Arsenal in a titanic WSL encounter on Friday night that would produce a new league leader if the Blues emerge victorious.
