Inter star Lautaro Martinez has admitted that it was his 'dream' to play alongside Lionel Messi at Barcelona last summer. However, he is now committed to life at San Siro, and is even prepared to sign a new contract in Milan.
The 23-year-old had openly admitted that it was a lifelong ambition to play for Barça, and a move to Camp Nou may have come to fruition last season, had the club not been embroiled in off-the-field turmoil.
Martinez was left disappointed by the failed move to Barça, and while speaking in an interview with Sportweek, the Argentine admitted that it was his dream to take to the field alongside the magical Messi.
“It was a big dream for me,” Martinez admitted. “It’s amazing to play with him (Messi), he is the best player in the world and I am lucky enough to play with him in the national team. He is an inspiration for young players.”
Despite his initial heartbreak at not joining forces with Messi in Catalonia, Martinez has decided to knuckle down at Inter, stating he is 'happy' at the club, and 'calm' over the prospect of agreeing a new contract extension.
He continued: “I am happy at Inter, Milan is a great city. My agent and the club are talking and I am calm. I only want to give everything for Inter, then we’ll reach an agreement.”
And with the form he is in and the team built around him, it's easy to see why he's content in Milan. Martinez has struck up an amazing partnership with fellow striker Romelu Lukaku, and he had only praise for the Belgian hitman, both as a player and a man.
“I fell well with him, on and off the pitch. He is such a nice guy, he speaks eight languages and it’s important in a team like ours," he added.
"He is so humble too, his history is similar to mine. We come from nothing, we understand each other.”
