La Liga confirm all 39 of its clubs have rejected Super League proposal

La Liga has confirmed that the 39 clubs from Spain's two top-tiers who were not invited to join the Super League have unanimously rejected the proposal.
Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid made up the Spanish contingent offered a place in the much-maligned breakaway competition. However, the latter of the three has since withdrawn their intention to feature along with a host of the other planned participants.
Despite mounting pressure, Barça and Real have yet to to do likewise, with their respective presidents Joan Laporta and Florentino Perez both committed to the idea - if not in its current form.
La Liga has now met its 39 other representatives to discuss the prospect of the three Spanish giants joining the Super League and they unanimously voted against the proposal.
In a statement released on the league's official website, the league confirmed they 'vigorously rejected the plans' and thanked fans for the support they've shown since the Super League's announcement.
"La Liga met today with the 39 clubs not invited to be part of the European Super League to discuss the recent proposal for this format," the statement read.
"The clubs present have unanimously and vigorously rejected the plans to create this competition. All clubs strongly believe in sporting merit as the sole criterion for qualifying for international club competitions through the respective national leagues.
"Today, football fans across Europe can dream that their club, whatever its size, can excel in competition, rise to the top, and compete at the pinnacle of European football. This European tradition in which football for all prevails is paramount and must not be threatened or modified.
"The opposition shown globally in recent days has shown that a closed and elitist European league is unworkable and unwanted. The reactions that have been seen across Europe demonstrate how important an open ecosystem is for football and communion with the fans.
"La Liga and the clubs gathered today want to thank everyone involved for the support they have shown this week on this key issue for the future of football.
"La Liga will continue to work with stakeholders, including fan groups, the government, UEFA, the RFEF, the AFE and the European Leagues to protect the best interests of the game and ask clubs that remain involved in the proposed competition to cease. your participation immediately."
