Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp turned down an approach from the DFB with a view to taking charge of the Germany national team in recent weeks, sources have confirmed to 90min.

Germany parted ways with Hansi Flick on September 10 after a horrendous run of four wins in 17 games, culminating with a 4-1 defeat at home to Japan earlier this month.

90min reported in wake of Flick's exit that the DFB had made Klopp a top candidate for the head coach job, but his agent dismissed suggestions he would take on the role days after.

The DFB have since appointed Julian Nagelsmann as Germany's head coach on a deal running until the end of Euro 2024, which will take place on home soil.

However, 90min understands that the DFB did follow up their interest in Klopp with an approach to the 56-year-old even before the sacking of Flick was formalised. Nevertheless, it was made clear in their conversations that he was not interested in leaving Liverpool at this time.

Klopp does have ambitions and desires to manage the Germany national team, but not at this current stage of his career.

Speaking to RTL earlier this week, Klopp outlined why he was keen to remain loyal to Liverpool.

"We're building Liverpool 2.0 here, we want to attack again and not just look at how much longer can we go on. I have a loyalty to Liverpool," he said.

"My heart is here in Liverpool. You can't just cut out the eight years. I signed a contract here and, as far as I can remember, I wasn't drugged or tied up and had to sign with my mouth. That was a free decision. And that's why it doesn't fit."
