Jurgen Klopp calls it 'silly' for Liverpool to think about Premier League title

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said it would be ‘silly’ to talk about the Reds being in the Premier League title race following Thursday night’s defeat to Burnley at Anfield, having not even scored a goal in their last four games and only one since Christmas.

Ashley Barnes scored the decisive goal for Burnley after he himself was tripped by an onrushing Alisson when Fabinho gambled and let him have a free run at goal.

The 1-0 defeat was the first time that Liverpool have lost a Premier League game at Anfield since April 2017, nearly four years of action. The result leaves them in fourth place, six points behind leaders Manchester United and Klopp insists his team must rediscover their form before they even think about the possibility of competing to retain the title they won with ease last season.

“If I sit now here, losing against Burnley and didn't score for the last four games and talk about the title race how silly that would be?” Klopp is quoted by the Daily Mail. “We need to score goals and that is what we have to do. That's the job a manager and coach has to do.”

Liverpool’s task is only getting more challenging and they face a potentially make or break few weeks in all competitions within the next month.

The Reds face Manchester United for the second time in a week on Sunday when they travel to Old Trafford in the fourth round of the FA Cup. That is then quickly followed by back-to-back away trips to London to face Tottenham and West Ham before the end of January.

February starts with a home game against Brighton, before games in quick succession against Manchester City and Leicester. Liverpool then face a dangerous RB Leipzig when the Champions League resumes on 16 February, and then Everton in the Merseyside derby on 20 February.

All in all, that is eight monumentally important games in the space of a month from now.
