Joshua Kimmich reacts to 'worst day' of career
Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich has said he feels 'afraid' after Germany were knocked out in the World Cup group stages, dubbing it the worst day of his career.
Germany made the nightmare start to their World Cup campaign, losing their opening match 2-1 to Japan. However, they entered their third match with a chance of going through after they drew with Spain and the Japanese lost to Costa Rica in matchday two.
While they did their part though, beating Costa Rica 4-2, Japan came from behind to beat Spain 2-1, knocking Germany out of the tournament as a result.
It's the second time in a row that Kimmich and his nation have failed to make it out of the World Cup group stages, and the Bayern man is mentally struggling in the aftermath.
"For me personally, this is the worst day of my career," he said, via Bild. 'I'm afraid I'll fall into a hole. It makes you think, these failures are connected to my person. We messed up in 2018, then we blew up the Euros last year."
As he said, Euro 2020 was also a hugely disappointing tournament for Germany, winning just one group, before losing to England in the first knockout round.
A big improvement will be expected for Euro 2024, especially on home soil as hosts.
