Jose Mourinho Bemoans VAR for Failing to Overrule Manchester United Penalty
By Ali Rampling
Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho was full of criticism for VAR after his side were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Manchester United.
Spurs had led through Steven Bergwijn's first half strike, only to be pegged back by a Bruno Fernandes penalty after Eric Dier brought down Paul Pogba in the box - a decision Mourinho was adamant should have been over turned by the technology.
Referee John Moss awarded United another spot kick when Dier appeared to foul Fernandes, but the decision was overruled by VAR.
“I’m not happy with the penalty or the second penalty,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “I’m unhappy with the VAR, not the referee. In the game, he can make a mistake, give a cheap penalty. The VAR is there to do the job, I’m not unhappy with Moss, I’m unhappy with the VAR.
“I’m unhappy with Moss for the second penalty because he didn’t give the free-kick for [Serge] Aurier, then he gave a cheap, non-penalty, and VAR tells the truth.”
Mourinho started Dier at centre back alongside Davinson Sanchez, with Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld left on the bench. Despite Dier's role in the United equaliser, the Tottenham boss was full of praise for his centre half.
"I think he [Dier] was fantastic, he played very well," Mourinho added. "I think Davinson [Sanchez] made one mistake in the first half, a technical mistake that gave [Marcus] Rashford a chance. Dier was absolutely perfect."
The result leaves Spurs six points off Chelsea in fourth spot - although their London rivals now have a game in hand - and four points behind United in fifth, which could be enough to secure a Champions League place if Manchester City's European football ban is upheld.
Mourinho's side return to action on Tuesday evening, with a trip to their relegation threatened London rivals West Ham.
