Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has stated that the Premier League must show leadership and not punish clubs by postponing more of their games due to COVID-19.

The Portuguese coach insists that his side's schedule would become unfeasibly hectic if more of Spurs' fixtures are postponed, considering their place in the Europa League and the prospect of the European Championships scheduled to commence on June 11.

The Spurs boss' words come after his team's trip to Aston Villa, set for Wednesday, has been cast into doubt due to a coronavirus outbreak in the Villa first-team squad.

As quoted by Sky Sports, Mourinho said: "We cannot be put in an impossible situation. To have three matches postponed would be impossible. It's the moment for the Premier League to show leadership, to make decisions. A club like us is trying everything every day to be ready to play, to follow the rules we have in our hands.

"We cannot be punished. If we don't play against Aston Villa, that will be three matches postponed, and that will be impossible. After the season we have the Euros, and of course the Euros are not going to be moved. I believe it is an impossible situation for a club to have three matches postponed, especially if that club plays in Europe."

Tottenham already had a match postponed late last month, as their game against Fulham was called off at the 11th hour due to coronavirus cases at the west London club. Mourinho voiced his displeasure at the late decision taken by the Premier League on social media.

That match had been postponed until April but has since been moved once more as Spurs triumphed over Brentford in midweek to reach the final of the EFL Cup - scheduled for April 25.

Despite Mourinho's concerns, the coronavirus outbreak at Villa makes it likely that their scheduled clash will have to moved, meaning that Spurs may not play another Premier League game until next Sunday when they are due to travel to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United.
